The NIV Exposed

by Dr. Ken Matto

Many churches and Christians are now using the New International Version (NIV) and many believe it will replace the King James Version. We are seeing this come to pass at an alarming rate but the purpose of this study is to let the NIV be its own spokesman in the area of accuracy. We will compare only fifty verses from the following versions:

KJV - King James Version
NIV - New International Version
NAB - New American Bible (Roman Catholic Church)
NWT - New World Translation (Jehovah's Witnesses)
The King James Version will be first and the omitted or changed part of the verse will be underlined to indicate the corruption in the NIV. You will also see the NIV's absolute agreement with the NAB and the NWT. Personally, I would be very suspicious of a translation that has so much in common with the Roman Catholic Church and the Jehovah's Witnesses. Another reason I would totally discount this book is because 2 homosexuals were involved in the translation of it. Dr. Virginia Mollenkott and Dr. Marten Woudstra, who was Chairman of the Old Testament Committee.

Dear Pastor, if your church uses the NIV, do you ever wonder why your people are biblically illiterate, spiritually weak, and confused about the Bible or why your sermons are watered down mush? Well, now you know why! You have been using a JW and RC Bible. The evidence is below! You can reject it but you can't refute it!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matthew 8:29
KJV: And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

NIV: "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"
NWT: And, look! they screamed, saying: "What have we to do with you, Son of God? Did you come here to torment us before the appointed time?"
NAB: With a sudden shriek they cried: "Why meddle with us, Son of God? Have you come to torture us before the appointed time?"

Matthew 17:21
KJV: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

NIV: Omitted
NWT: Omitted
NAB: [This kind does not leave but by prayer and fasting.] (Placed in Brackets)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reader who relies on the New International Version as his sole means of access to the Word of God has no grounds for confidence, at any given passage, that he is hearing the words of God rather than the words of man.
-Trinitarian Bible Society - The New International Version
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matthew 18:11
KJV: For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

NIV: Omitted
NWT: Omitted

Matthew 19:9
KJV: And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

NIV: I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.
NWT: I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on the ground of fornication, and marries another commits adultery."
NAB: I now to say to you, whoever divorces his wife (lewd conduct is a separate case) and marries another commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

Matthew 27:35
KJV: And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

NIV: When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
NWT: When they had impaled him they distributed his outer garments by casting lots.
NAB: When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among them casting lots.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In too many passages, however, the NIV translation has the slick rhythm and "chatty" conversational styles of a contemporary novel or a television drama. While many people may enjoy such a style, this approach seems to be centered upon the expectation of the worldly-minded reader, instead of upon the need to convey faithfully the words that God actually gave.
-Trinitarian Bible Society - The New International Version
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mark 6:11
KJV: And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

NWT: And wherever a place will not receive you nor hear you, on going out from there shake off the dirt that is beneath your feet for a witness to them"

NWT: Further, I say this: As to the covenant previously validated by God, the law that has come into being four hundred and thirty years later does not invalidate it, so as to abolish the promise.
NAB: My point is this: a covenant formally ratified by God is not set aside as invalid by any law that came into being four hundred and thirty years later, nor is its promise nullified.

The translation is not "the most accurate," for many passages are paraphrased rather than translated, failing to distinguish between the inspired words of the Biblical writers and the explanations, additions and omissions introduced by the translators. The versions is not the best in literary style for faithfully communicating the Word of God, because it is made to conform with the worldly expectations of unbelieving readers instead of using a style that is suited to the unique subject matter of the original. The translation is, hence, unsuitable for use by the evangelical believer, who wishes to be sure that he has in front of him a sufficiently accurate representation of the words which God spoke.

Scripture verses marked (NWT) are from the New World Translation. Copyright 1961 by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania.

Scripture verses marked (NAB) are from the New American Bible, copyright 1970 by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington, D.C. (St. Joseph's Edition)

No permission needed to quote NIV, it is under 1,000 verses.

With The King James Version, you don't need anyone's permission to quote because it is God's Word not man's.

After reading the comparisons, there are only two summaries which can be arrived at:

1) The NIV is as corrupt as the NWT, or
2) The NWT is as accurate as the NIV

I prefer to take all translations with a grain of salt and consult with the Greek or Hebrew if its an issue. The resources to do this at this time are widely and immediately available so there is little excuse for one who is concerned.
Certainly we should recognise that the KJV was translated in a deliberately archaic language at the time of its original printing in order to create a sense of religious awe and respect for the text. But this sort of religious manipulation is not found in the NT texts at least.

Oh dear another one who thinks that the sacred language is something not spoken today.

Strange how God is restricted to the use of set languages, latin or old english, but never ever a language that the ordinary vulgar people speak.

What a shame that Tyndale should have had the ambition of enabling the common vulgar people to be able to read and understand the bible.

What a pity he was so bold as to translate biblical words in many different ways, even using inaccurate translations so as to avoid words like 'charity' which while an accurate translation had a set meaning in the rc church.

Another problem for you, different cultures have different ways of understanding narative. I was reading of one were the hero, the 'good guy' is alwaus intoduced first. This made satan into 'a good guy' as he appears first in the story of the fall.
Oh dear the sacred order of the kj bible has not been followed, Adam is now appearing first in the fall of man.
The scriptures are living, not that they eat and breath but that they react with our spirit.
God wants souls saved not collections of bibles.

Man, The other translations even omitted the smiley faces! This is very informative.

I have a question:
Have you looked into whether or not the KJV added anything which the others, rightfully, left out? The amount of info left out is alarming.....I would like to know if there was a justifiable reason.

What is the point of posting this? The NIV and most other modern translations are based on the excellent work of teams of dedicated scholars, using the greatest collection of manuscripts in history, and understanding better than ever the languages and cultures of the time the "books" were written. You are citing the report of one biased individual who wants to show everyone that he knows more than the groups of the most distinguished Christian scholars. The world is full of such Pharisaic "experts" who seek nothing more than self-aggrandizement.

The manuscript base for the Old Testament was the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia Masoretic Hebrew Text. Other ancient texts consulted were the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Aquila, Symmachus and Theodotion, the Latin Vulgate, the Syriac Peshitta, the Aramaic Targum, and for the Psalms the Juxta Hebraica of Jerome. The manuscript base for the New Testament was the Koine Greek language editions of the United Bible Societies and of Nestle-Aland. The deuterocanonical books are not included in the translation. using the greatest collection of manuscripts in history

As of this date, are you aware that there are some 5300 MSS alone of the NT? Fragments, papyrus, parchments, and codexs.

Collating, cataloging, comparisons, taking into account textual variants, scribal habits, etc alone would take 25-50 years alone with the current list of MSS available.

Gordon Fee, for example, in his dissertation on "The Significance of Papyrus Bodmer II and Papyrus Bodmer XIV-XV for Methodology in New Testament Textual Criticism" compares just the text of John against some 10 other MSS. that alone took quite some time.

And then we have George E. Rice's work: "The Alteration of Luke's Tradition by the Textual Variants in Codex Bezae". And he only compared the Codex D to the Codex B (Vaticanus). That work alone took a year.

It is preposterous to say they (the NIV) were "using the greatest collection of manuscripts in history".

Considering the amount of work involved if you used all 5300 MSS, (just of the New Testament) would take even 100 scholars darn near a lifetime. That is part of the reason there have been no "new" versions per se, that have came out.

And that in the last two decades no serious undertaking of textual criticism has taken place? I've have been doing a minor study, 2 years, in textual criticism and have had to take a break myself.

"using the greatest collection of manuscripts in history", yea...right.

So we have fewer manuscripts than any other time in history? What happens? Do they blow away or are researchers and museums burning them?

No, all I'm saying is, that when most versions of the Bible were written, including the top selling and most favorite version, there were perhaps less than 1000 known MSS.

And to say the NIV is based upon "the most accurate Greek MSS" is wrong.

If it was, there would have been no need for revisions.

As I said earlier, there are more ancient manuscripts available now than ever before, and the number is likely to increase (not decrease) over time.

Have you considered that revisions are made because the English translation isn't as accurate as the translators wish? There are not only more manuscripts than ever before (both biblical and non-biblical) but the increased knowledge of the nuances of the languages and the customs of the period allows for revisions and better translations than before.

Contrary to the KJVO people's claims, the process of translation continues as more knowledge is gained. Hallelujah!

Mark 11:26
KJV: But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

NIV: Omitted
NWT: Omitted
NAB: Omitted

Mark 15:28
KJV: And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
NIV: Omitted
NWT: Omitted
NAB: Omitted

Unfortunately, it appears that the KJV translators, using some very late manuscripts, inadvertently added words to Scripture that were never intended to be there.

The verses that you cited are noted in the NIV and others as "some manuscripts include..." There is not enough textual evidence for those to be included in modern translations.

I don't think that anything was "inadvertently" added. It was intentional, as the translators were very careful in their work.

Based on what evidence?

The KJV translators did not have access to the oldest manuscripts because they had not yet been re-discovered. The Greek text they had, was based on manuscripts that even had a portion of Revelation missing.

The KJV translators, as careful as they were, did not have the resources available to them that would have been required to avoid inadvertently adding verses not found in the original text.

OLDEST does not mean BEST or more ACCURATE

Not always, but quite often it does. And since we have thousands of Greek manuscripts and tens of thousands of quotes of those manuscripts to which we can compare, we have a pretty good idea that most of the older manuscripts are far more accurate to the original.

Wrong. often it does not.

Funny how the majority of these manuscripts support the KJV and NOT the modern perversions
