The new shape of the culture war is a revived Lost Cause
As conservatives survey the American cultural landscape, they see themselves besieged on all sides, their values and beliefs attacked everywhere they look — even, at times, by their own children. But while they may feel culturally powerless, they have political power, and they’re going to use it.

Which gives the current incarnation of our eternal culture war a particular shape. It’s a conflict in which liberal ideas make progress by coursing through popular culture, social and online interactions, and large and diffuse institutions like higher education. Then conservatives strike back using levers of concentrated political power.

As is so often the case, race is at the center of this battle, and conservatives are waging what amounts to a new version of the Lost Cause, the post-Civil War effort to rewrite the story of that war into one where noble Southerners fought only for their homes and the principle of states’ rights, and besides, slavery wasn’t so bad anyway. It was stunningly successful, but things have changed — and for some it requires a renewal.

When you can't control speech, use power to wipe it out.

Yep, that's what wokeism and cancel culture and CRT is all about.......
The irony of people complaining about "cancel culture" while banning the teaching of topics in schools because they don't like the idea of looking at the past in the United States where Americans are always the heroes. It's a very cartoonish and immature attitude to have when looking at the past.

Oh nooo....the conservatives are rewriting history again?

Here's the claim of this opinion/propaganda piece...

conservatives are waging what amounts to a new version of the Lost Cause, the post-Civil War effort to rewrite the story of that war

You know what would make this opinion obviously wrong? If he completely contradicts himself immediately..

Multiple Republican state legislatures have moved to ban the teaching of “critical race theory” in schools; a notion heretofore only understood by a relatively small number of academics has become a right-wing buzzword...

Oh...so the conservatives are stopping teachers from teaching obscure racial topics that even the teachers don't understand.

In a highly unusual move, members of the board of trustees of the University of North Carolina intervened apparently to prevent the university’s journalism school from granting a tenured position to Nikole Hannah-Jones, the prizewinning reporter behind the New York Times’ 1619 Project

Uhhh...is this guy against false historical narratives or not? The 1619 Project has more in common with the Lost Cause than anything Conservatives are doing. They're both false historical narratives invented to cater to a racial narrative pushed by a political agenda.

It's not really highly unusual for a university to decide that factual evidence is more important than pushing a blatantly false political agenda masquerading as history.

It is unusual for a supposedly respected news source, like the NYT, to decide to praise itself for selling obviously false historical narratives. Why would anyone regard them as anything other than propaganda now?

Republicans in multiple states have introduced bills specifically banning schools from using materials from the 1619 Project, which focuses on slavery as a central component of American history.

In Texas, GOP legislators have introduced a raft of bills to all but wipe slavery and racism from the state’s official memory. As the New York Times reports, the bills would ban the use of the 1619 Project and limit how teachers “can discuss the ways in which racism influenced the legal system in the state
.”

The NYT pretended to be historians...then went back to pretending to be journalists when their fake history got rejected.

The only thing remarkable is that they thought this indoctrination would either go unnoticed or accepted. The reaction here is the inevitable bursting of their ideological bubble. They should try going back to reporting news.

When you can't control speech, use power to wipe it out.

Is this actually coming from conservative legislators or concerned parents who don't want their children indoctrinated into blatantly false political narratives?

I guess if this were a real news article....that might have been explored a bit. It's not though, it's just left wing propaganda.

Texas' divisive bill limiting how students learn about current events and historic racism passed by Senate
The Senate-approved version revives specific essential curriculum standards that students are required to understand, including the Declaration of Independence and the Federalist Papers. But it stripped more than two dozen requirements to study the writings or stories of multiple women and people of color that were also previously approved by the House, despite attempts by Democratic senators to reinstate some of those materials in the bill.

The Senate did vote to include the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, the 13th 14th and 19th amendments to the U.S. Constitution and the complexity of the relationship between Texas and Mexico to the list of required instruction.

Yet the most controversial aspects of the bill remain, including that teachers must explore current events from multiple positions without giving “deference to any one perspective.” It also bars students from getting course credit for civic engagement efforts, including lobbying for legislation or other types of political activism.

“Giving equal weight to all sides concerning current events would mean that the El Paso terrorist ideology would have to be given equal weight to the idea that racism is wrong,” said Trinidad Gonzales, a history professor and assistant chair of the dual enrollment program at South Texas College. “That is the problem, white supremacy would be ignored or given deference if addressed. That is the problem with the bill.”

That's exactly what we need, a government controlling speech and giving equal weight to racism. Essentially, arguing there are very fine people on both sides.

The 1619 project and critical race theory have absolutely no place in our educational system. Conditioning children with false narratives, false history, and concepts that suggests that they should hate themselves and judge every one based on the color of their skin is abhorrent. The federal government has not place in setting state controlled educational standards.

Difficult question. It seems to me that we need to study history from different angles. This is the only way to form critical thinking. And the imposition of one-sided views can only harm society. I recommend reading https://gradesfixer.com/free-essay-examples/cultural-diversity/ which tells a lot about the diversity of cultures in our time and before. This resource helped me better prepare for college classes, so I wanted to share it with you.

Only if all angles are based on facts and established science. You can't give equal time to the mainstream and to fringe extremism. That way, you only make it appear to the pupils as if both things have equal value and likelyhood.

I don't think race is as central now in the culture war as religious nationalism and gestures towards fascism. It can have racial dimensions, but not exclusively so.
