This movie is about Joan of Arc, and I’ve always liked it even before I became a Christian, but watching it again I was wondering if perhaps she was under spiritual delusions. Was Dustin Hoffman’s character supposed to be God or Satan?

I understand the Roman church had long schismed by this time, but that’s besides the point of this post. I understand that we can’t expect coherent theology from Hollywood.

I liked the tv miniseries much better.

Joan of Arc (miniseries) - Wikipedia

Back when I used to watch tv.

The depictions of Joan are very different. Both actresses were good performers but the portrayal in the movie was more hysterical by its script whereas in the miniseries Leelee Sobieski was more sane & inspiring. Dustin Hoffman as “the conscience” was unnecessary (my pathetic opinion) whereas in the miniseries the conflict between Joan & Bishop Cauchon ( Peter O’Toole) was intense, saddening & even tragic. Then Joan had to face off against a Papal legate played by Maxmillian Schell during her trial.
