The shepherd is the owner and the manager of the sheep, he has to keep them together and safe from predators. They are vulnerable and not very clever.

We all need the Shepherd, because 'we all, like sheep have gone astray. We have turned everyone to his own way,but the LORD has laid upon Himself our iniquity'. He is the 'Good Shepherd, who gave His life for the sheep'. He watches over us and guides us.

There are some fascinating insights in the book 'A Shepherd looks at Psalm 23' by W Phillip Keller...
'Sheep do not just take care of themselves, as some might suppose. They require, more than any other class of livestock, endless attention and meticulous care' 'It is no accident that God has chosen to call us sheep...'

    sheep...human beings...

    Mass minds (mob instinct)
    fears and timidity
    stubborness and stupidity
    perverse habits, are all parallels

God chooses us, buys us, calls us by name, makes us his own, and delights in caring for us.

Life is full of hazards, sheep also cannot rest and lie down unless they are free from friction, for the Christian, there is no substitute for the presence of the Good Shepherd, staying near to the Lord.

Can't remember where I read this but a writer decided to spend some time with a shepherd and their flock. The shepherd whispered a good distance from the sheep so the writer asks why. The reply was when the sheep hear my voice, they'll come running.

(know Yahweh speaks in numerous, varied ways but I like this).
