The lies of the enemy

John 8:44

You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it

Satan is a liar, the very first liar. He lied to the angels, he lied to Adam and Eve, and now he is lying to us. Lies are his resource, and through them he has deceived the whole world:

Revelation 12:9

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him

I think we have greatly misunderstood the battle he is waging against us. More than anything, the devil is trying to control what we think:

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ

In controlling what we think, he can control what we do; it's really that simple. This passage is telling us that his goal is to deceive us about the knowledge of God. The more we know and understand God, the freer we are. We fight back against his wicked power of deception with the weapons God has given us, one of which is the sword of the Spirit:

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart

To discern the lies we have believed, and to bring those thoughts into captivity to obey Christ, we need the word of God. The word of God will expose every lie the devil has ever sold us. The strongholds will fall when the lies are exposed and we are conformed to the truth. Therefore, when we know and believe the truth about God, we will be delivered of his lies and be set free:

John 8:32

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free
