I don't believe the law is contrary to or opposing Grace, "if" it is done or attained to for the right reasons, which requires the right method or path in keeping or attaining to fulfilling it, that is, to and for the purposes of unselfish, un-self-serving "Love"... The path of Agape Love...

Can you think of anything or anyone who would, or what would be a picture of that...?

Only Christ himself comes to mind for me...

God Bless!

Hey it's the atheist again asking a question that came up in my bible study group this week (yes it is a Christian bible study group).

We were talking about how to harmonize Paul and Jesus and we got to talking about obeying the ot law.
Our group was split with some saying that Jesus intended his injunction to follow all the ot laws for Jews only and others saying it should be read to apply to all believers (although not as a salvation issue)

What says you? What are your most compelling arguments for each interpretation and where do you come down?

The New Covenant is not a born with covenant. We are bound by an older covenant born with us. Thus the Jews need to obey the Mosaic Law as part of their covenant and we gentiles need to follow "the Law written in our hearts", that is, our conscience and our moral code. However, we will fail at one point or anther inevitably. So if we are judged using the standard of these older covenants we won't pass the final judgement. We thus need to get to the New Covenant.

The older covenants are not abolished in terms of how we should obey them. That is, the Jews need to abide by the Mosaic Law while we gentiles need to follow our conscience to act, these won't save us though. We need to obey them such that we won't sin at will. However the more important thing to do is to follow the requirements set forth in the New Covenant, as only the New Covenant will have the salvation effect on us

In terms of the final judgment the older covenants are abolished as they have no effect on us in the sense that we won't keep them. From this perspective, it is said that the older covenants are thus the teaching or guidance to us. The New Covenant itself doesn't come with a set of Law equivalent to the Mosaic Law or "the Law written in our hearts". That's why it is referred to as a covenant with 100% Grace.
