All those ready to go on a journey through the New Testament should come here to discuss the answers to the following questions:
We would work our way through the gospels in this order St. John, St Mark, St. Luke, St. Matthew. We would then be able to go through some of the epistles: Philippians, James, 1John. This order is open to changed based on member input. The primary goal of this stage is to get a firm foundation in the gospel.Member discussion will take place regarding which books will follow after we finish those in stage one.
The Plan of Action:
1. Read through the chapter carefully, seeking to find its main subject or subjects.
2. As you read each chapter, give it a title which suggests its main content.
3. Answer these questions:
a. What is the main subject of this passage?
b. Who are the persons revealed in this passage: Who is speaking? About whom is he speaking? Who is acting?
c. What is the key verse of this passage?
d. What does this passage teach me about the Lord Jesus Christ?
e. Does this passage portray any sin for me to confess and forsake?
f. Does this passage contain any command for me to obey?
g. Is there any promise for me to claim?
h. Is there any instruction for me to follow?
5.Answer scripture with scripture. If you have a question consult a concordance
The goal of this thread is to get different opinions on the same scripture, not to debate! Please take debates to the proper forum. Thanks,
Kryzoz

I would like to join in as much as I can. If anyone has a problem with me participating just let me know and I'll bow out gracefully. I would rather do that than have someone feel they can't participate because I'm here. However, can we start tomorrow with John 1, it is just too late for me to start tonight.

Every one is welcome. If they don;t want to participate because you are here they are more than welcome to start their own club. I myself don;t have a problem with you participating. After all everyone has a right to take what they want from the study. This is not the place for debating. You will be safe here so help me!

Thanks for the welcome.

I liked Kryoz answers so I’m going to only put up things where I have a different emphasis.

1. I agree that Jesus is the main subject of this chapter. It is impossible to accept the Bible as truth without accepting Jesus as God, Creator and Redeemer.

3. The key verse for me is 12
12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— (NIT)

6. In light of 12 I think that it is important for us to believe. As I understand John Wesley’s teaching (and let me know the proper way to refer to him) we must take the step to believe. We do this through prevenient grace. It seems to me that it is unavoidable that there is one moment when you do not believe, and then you make the motion in your heart to accept Christ and everything becomes clear. There is a motion from unbelief, or skepticism, to belief. It is such a small thing and the reward is so much greater than the motion but it is there, we must believe.

8. I think there is also instruction for us besides just believing.
In verse 39 Christ tells Peter and John “Come and see” (KJV), or “Come… and you will see” (NIV) Phillip tells Nathaniel the same thing in verse 46. This also follow the Lords admonition to Phillip in 43, the simple “Follow me.”

In todays world many people are starting to admit that there must have been a historical Christ. Even Jews today will admit that Christ lived and was a Rabbi. What they have not done is “Followed him, and seen.” Or experienced the wonderful light that comes from belief. Because of this I do think we are admonished to “Follow him and see.”

I loved the answers already given, and for the most part I agree with them. The only thing I noticed that was completely different from what I came up with was the key verse.

Since I saw the main subject of this chapter as really introducing Jesus as the Son of God, the main verse for me was 30: "Look the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." To me there is so much wrapped in that short sentence.

Anywho...I'm really going to enjoy this...thank you for starting it Kryzoz

Okay, finally finished with Chapter 1, :)

First off, only because I'm short on time at the moment, I am going to say that I love the other answers given, and agree! But there are two things I keyed in on:

First off, Marvmax~ I love the way you summed it up.

You said, "In todays world many people are starting to admit that there must have been a historical Christ. Even Jews today will admit that Christ lived and was a Rabbi. What they have not done is “Followed him, and seen.” Or experienced the wonderful light that comes from belief. Because of this I do think we are admonished to “Follow him and see.”

I love this!! It is absolutely true, and I thank you for putting it onto "paper" for us to read.

Secondly, I am enjoying how we seem to have different ideas of what the "key verse" is. I love seeing what caught everyone's attention, because it really shows what the passage meant to each of us.

With that said, the key verse for me was verse 14: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Love it, :)

I believe the subject of the passage is Jesus Christ being introduced to the world and not being comprehended by it, even though he created it. He was recognized by John and others who had some belief in him, but there is a sense of though they recognized him as Christ, others did not know him and nobody understood him. There is a wonderful promise of the truth of the real nature of things being revealed, to a world that was always in darkness.

If there is any command in it perhaps it is to believe - the promise being God did not leave us in darkness but showed us the truth.

“He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” John 1:10-11

OK I'll take a shot at it.

This Chapter covers 2 accounts of the Saviors life. The wedding in Cana (1-12), and Jesus’ first visit to the temple (13-25).

a. What is the main subject of this passage? I feel the subject of both of these passages is the Savior. Of course this is going to be true for the whole of the Book of John.

b. Who are the persons revealed in this passage: Who is speaking? About whom is he speaking? Who is acting? Ummm... Let’s see Jesus’ Mother, the Servants, his disciples, the “ruler of the feast”, the bridegroom, the sellers in the temple, the Jews.

I’m kind of following Kryzoz here in listing everyone, but in reality many of these people are not really germane to the discussion. In fact I would say that the real players, so to speak, would be his Mother, the servants, and the sellers, and the Jews.

c. What is the key verse of this passage? OK for me there are two, one for each account.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

d. What does this passage teach me about the Lord Jesus Christ? One of the things that really bugs me about the way the Savior seems to be portrayed in popular culture is as a aesthetic holy man type. In my mind the popular portrayal is as a girly man. These two stories belie that portrayal. First Jesus is shown as enjoying himself with friends and family at a wedding. When asked to produce wine for the party, he not only produced the wine, but he produced good wine, and he produced a lot of it.

There is one other thing about this passage. Some people have said that the Savior spoke disrespectfully to his mother because of this passage.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

This sounds harsh in the KJV but the in the Greek it is not so harsh. In the NIV it is translated as “Dear Woman” instead of “Woman”. We must always realize that the Bible is a translation and we should try, to the best of our ability, to make sure that we are understanding what was being said in the original language. I have no idea why the translators of the KJV chose to translate this this way. Perhaps in 1609 that phasing in English did not sound as harsh as it does to us today.

Secondly, his visit to the temple. What does this tell us about him? Let me regress just a little and tell of an epiphany I once had. I was decking a roof and we lost power to our power saws. Does the boss tell us to just quit while we wait for the power? No he has us pull out the hand tools and we start cutting plywood by hand. I thought my arm was going to fall off after cutting through 4 feet of plywood a couple of times and I thought; “Man I’d be built [I'd say 'buff' today but we didn't think that way in the old days] if I did this all the time.” That was when it hit me that the Savior had been a carpenter who did all of his work by hand. He must have been a very strong man, and in my eyes he was big. So here he is seeing that his Father’s house is being desecrated. He sits down and makes a scourge and then start driving people out. Sure they might have felt a little guilty, but I think they were just plain scared of this person Jesus. However, we also see that he wasn’t just going berserk because when he came to the doves, he had them take them out so that no harm would come to them. When he was done he stayed around and calmly answered questions.

e. Does this passage portray any sin for me to confess and forsake? The only thing that I can see is that I might have a little more zeal when I see things that are wrong and need to be fixed. I sometimes just let things go the way they are and try not to rock the boat.

f. Does this passage contain any command for me to obey? Yes I think so.

5His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

I’ve always wondered what would have happened if the servants had not filled the pots? The fact is that the only way that the Savior generally chooses to act in this life is through us. He knows what he wants to have happen so we should just do the things we’re asked. When we feel the urgings to go visit someone out of the blue how do we know that we’re not being led to answers someone’s heartfelt prayer for help? We don’t but he does. When we feel those urgings I think we should follow them. This is also something I should repent of too. I don’t always do what I feel I should.

g. Is there any promise for me to claim? I don’t think so.

h. Is there any instruction for me to follow? I think I covered this earlier.
