The Holy spirit

I have a friend who wants to receive the Holy Spirit. He says he does not know how to do it. I have prayed with him and told him he must keep asking for it. Is there a sure fire way that I do not know of..... to receive the Holy Spirit. I should add that he does have mental illness and would this get in the way of receiving the Holy Spirit? I do not think so, but he seems to be blocked. He goes to church more often than me and wants to be a Christian.

You both are right on it. Just keep asking until you know you have received it. There is no biblical equation other than believe and ask. I will pray for you both as well.

There's no "sure way' to receive the Holy Spirit. However, I don't believe his mental illness affects whether or not he receives the Spirit. At the right time, when in his heart he is fully ready to be devoted to God, the Spirit will come upon him. A lot of times I feel like receiving the Holy Spirit is associated with baptism, since that demonstrates giving your life to God. For me, I remember vividly the moment I felt His Spirit, and I didn't quite know what had happened at the time, but looking back I'm sure it was the Lord. Keep praying about it, and trusting God, and the Spirit will come on him when he is ready.

His mental illness will not be an impediment. Place your hands on him and pray and the Holy Spirit will be poured out on Him (Acts 8:17). Manifestation of the Spirit will be per God's will (Acts 2:4; 19:6). God bless .

The way you are describing the holy spirit seems more like a force than it does a person.
