I did not know that. Always liked bagpipes - I remember seeing a huge (hundreds of pipe bands) competition in Edinburgh back in the 1970s. I would not have guessed Jordan was so big on the pipes! Now I’m even more jealous of your trip.

It may seem strange, but bagpipes are most definitely a part of the instrumental repertoire of the Arab world, often connected to royal and/or state military celebrations. You can also see them in the various scouting troupes connected to the churches in the Holy Land at certain times of year, as in the video below of Arab Catholics taking part in the Palm Sunday celebrations in Jerusalem:

Are those bagpipes being played in that last picture??
I had a silly question pop into my mind - since someone else mentioned your appearance, I'll go ahead and ask.

You might not know if there's a difference anyway (since we are all just one person) ... but I'm curious if there's any difference in reception to you at various places because you have a beard? I wonder if different (i.e. longer) beards matter?

I don’t remember anyone mentioning my appearance? I’m not sure what you mean by your beard question, Anastasia? Most of the Arabs I’ve dealt with are clean-shaven and about half the Israelis have no beard either. Can you clarify your question? I want to answer it for you.

Well that's just it. ForgI've my ignorance but I didn't know who over there was clean-shaven or not, and the significance of beards, if any. I would suspect a minority of American travelers would have them, so I was curious if it made a difference one way or another.

Went to Wadi Rum today. It is a massive natural wonder where the Martian, Lawrence of Arabia, and the new Star Wars were filmed. We all drove in trucks at high speed with the wind at our backs and chilly faces as we made our way through gorges that reached to the clouds! Breathtaking, out of this world, surreal, magical....

We drank tea with Bedouin nomads our in the Wadi under tents. We learned about their life in the desert. We also were gathered where the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks was launched.

The images scratched into rock of camels and caravans is over 2,000 years old. The other two images date back to 1917, Arab Revolt era to mark the occasion.

We were only 40 miles from Saudi Arabia! You could look forward and keep going and you’d end up in Saudi....

I’m honestly surprised because practically nobody has a beard in this country!?! A few have mustaches, a few beards, but most are clean-shaven. Israel was heard central in comparison?

Did the Bedouins or anyone happen to tell you who is represented in those rock carvings, or have you mastered the Arabic script by now, يا استاذ؟ :)

You can probably guess just by the historical context, but it's still pretty neat. What cool pictures! I can't wait to see Petra!

I don't get it either. Is the subtext here whether or not he would be assumed to be Muslim based on the length of his beard?

Sorry for any confusion and distraction. I had no idea who did or didn't have beards in any of those places, so I was curious if having one made any impression on the locals. That's all.

(A good friend of mine visited an Asian country with her sister in law who was ethnically from there - a rather anti-American area - and had radically different experiences in the shops. My friend was often refused to purchase items, so she sent her sister in law in afterwards to buy anything she really wanted. Knowing that just made me curious if something like a beard might matter one way or another. Maybe I shouldn't have asked, but that one photo made you look like you might really fit in somewhere lol. But as I said, I know nothing of those cultures. I was only curious.)

What about the women? ^_^
Ha!

I can't believe all the places you're visiting! Kind of cool - we had Bible study today with maps - and so I had visual images from today to put together with our study. That was cool. Thanks!

I am enjoying following your adventure! I think you all made a great choice!!!

So we got up this morning at 5:30am and went down to breakfast. We ate and took off for Petra. We got there right before 7am. Here’s the positive and negative—-off-season, early in the morning, we had the place to ourselves. Negative—-HOLY GUACAMOLE IT WAS BUTT COLD!!!!! I had a t shirt, penelton long sleeve over it, sweat shirt over that, super heavy coat over that, Bedouin scarf, hat, hood, hand warmers and STILL I felt like I was in Siberia. I swear that was THE coldest day of my life. Jordan is super cold. In Amman there is snow actually. Israel was cold, but not this bad. Blue skies, lovely, but butt cold!

Petra...it IS everything people say it is, and much more. Sensory overload to the nth degree. I will share photos but they PALE in comparison with the grandeur, the drama, the enormity, the awe of seeing it in real life. We were there 8 hours....still didn’t see it all.

With Petra everyone thinks of the famous “Treasury,” but in reality there is so much more to it—-tombs, temples, amphitheater, caves, market areas, dams, arches, on and on....

I was, sadly, quite distracted by one thing—-exploitation of animals. I detest animal cruelty, and the way these Arabs overwork these donkeys, camels, it’s sickening. I wanted to beat these guys within an inch of their lives, but tried to look the other way. Several times I was appalled and baffled. My wife, who has far more of a threshold for that stuff being from the Philippines, was disgusted and commented several times that it bugged her. Anyway, on a more positive note....
