Genesis 1 speaks of three firmaments (or heavens) being created.
That's why I cringe when people quote Genesis 1:1 with the word "heavens" being plural.
God created one of the Heavens in Genesis 1:1.
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Then, in vs 7, God creates two more Heavens.
Genesis 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
Three firmaments = three Heavens.
Populated as follows:
1st Heaven = Earth & sky = plants and animals and mankind
2nd Heaven = outer space = planets, moons, stars
3rd Heaven = Heaven proper
Note that it is after He is finished with His creation, that He uses "heaven" in its plural form.
Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
