It is believed that the domestication of many staple crops that are now widely cultivated around the world began in the Fertile Crescent, an area that includes modern-day Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel. The Fertile Crescent is a region within ancient Mesopotamia, which is also believed to be the location of the Garden of Eden according to the biblical account.

The domestication of crops such as wheat, barley, lentils, peas, chickpeas, and flax is thought to have occurred in this region between 10,000 and 5,000 years ago. These crops were essential to the development of human civilization, as they allowed people to settle in one place and form permanent communities. They also served as the foundation for the development of agriculture, which is one of the key factors that allowed human populations to grow and spread across the globe.

In addition to these food crops, the region is also home to many other plant species that have cultural and religious significance, including the date palm, olive, and fig tree, as well as various herbs and spices that are still widely used today. The ancient agricultural practices that originated in Mesopotamia have had a profound influence on human history and continue to shape our relationship with the natural world today.

This may be true for the area around the Mediterranean, for China, Japan, the Indus Valley Civilization, Pre-colombian America etc, this does not apply.

How could civilization truly exist without maize, potatoes, and (of course) tomatoes?

Have you ever heard of the silk highway? It is still there if you want to travel it. My wife worked in Hong Kong for 9 years. We were married in Hong Kong 24 years ago. This is where the East meets the West. We went to the convention center looking for stuff to buy and resell.

"The Silk Road was a complex network of overland and maritime routes that spanned several thousand kilometers and connected regions as diverse as China, India, Persia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean world. The trade route played a key role in the development of many ancient civilizations, promoting cultural exchange, economic growth, and technological innovation.

Today, many parts of the Silk Road are still accessible and offer travelers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the ancient trade route".

The Silk Road didn't start until the second century BC.
