The Book Of Ruth: verse by verse

Rth 1:1 And it came to pass in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

Rth 1:2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

Rth 1:3 And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.

 

[mohawk]

Rth 1:4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelt there about ten years.

Rth 1:5 And Mahlon and Chilion died both of them; and the woman was left of her two children and of her husband.

 

[mohawk]

Rth 1:6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Jehovah had visited his people in giving them bread.

Rth 1:7 And she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

Rth 1:8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to her mother's house: Jehovah deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

Rth 1:9 Jehovah grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

Rth 1:10 And they said unto her, Nay, but we will return with thee unto thy people.

 

[mohawk]

Rth 1:11 "You must go back, my daughters," Naomi answered. "Why do you want to come with me? Do you think I could have sons again for you to marry?

Rth 1:12 Go back home, for I am too old to get married again. Even if I thought there was still hope, and so got married tonight and had sons,

 

[mohawk]

Rth 1:13 would you wait until they had grown up? Would this keep you from marrying someone else? No, my daughters, you know that's impossible. The LORD has turned against me, and I feel very sorry for you."

Rth 1:14 Again they started crying. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye and went back home, but Ruth held on to her.

 

[mohawk]

Rth 1:15 So Naomi said to her, "Ruth, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Go back home with her."

 

[mohawk]

Rth 1:16 But Ruth answered, "Don't ask me to leave you! Let me go with you. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.

Rth 1:16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

Rth 1:17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.


Rth 1:17 Wherever you die, I will die, and that is where I will be buried. May the LORD's worst punishment come upon me if I let anything but death separate me from you!"

Rth 1:18 When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she said nothing more.

 

[mohawk]

Rth 1:19 They went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived, the whole town became excited, and the women there exclaimed, "Is this really Naomi?"

Rth 1:20 "Don't call me Naomi," she answered; "call me Marah, because Almighty God has made my life bitter.
