The fighters holed up in the Azovstal complex in Mariupol have accused the government of abandoning them. There might be some truth to that.
Maybe they shouldn't have threatened the government with regime change. Maybe they should have listened when Zelensky tried to get their cooperation in upholding the Minsk agreement. So much that could have been avoided, and now they're paying for their bad choices with their lives and all of Ukraine is paying with a devastating war.
The nationalists thought that allowing autonomy for Donetsk and Luhansk within the federal structure of Ukraine was unacceptable. Now Ukraine has outright lost those Oblasts, along with at least two others.
