Steel prototype for border wall cut through with saw, photo shows
President Donald Trump has repeatedly advocated for a steel slat design for his border wall, which he described as "absolutely critical to border security" in his Oval Office address to the nation Tuesday. But Department of Homeland Security testing of a steel slatprototype proved it could be cut through with a saw, according to a report by DHS.

A photo exclusively obtained by NBC News shows the results of the test after military and Border Patrol personnel were instructed to attempt to destroy the barriers with common tools.

The Trump administration directed the construction of eight steel and concrete prototype walls that were built in Otay Mesa, California, just across the border from Tijuana, Mexico. Trump inspected the prototypes in March 2018. He has now settled on a steel slat, or steel bollard, design for the proposed border barrier additions. Steel bollard fencing has been used under previous administrations.

WATCH: Border Patrol Agent Shows Trump Tunnels Under Border Wall
Jan 11th, 2019

As President Donald Trump toured the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday, one official explained to him how enterprising crossers dig tunnels under walled off sections of the border.

During a roundtable discussion with law enforcement officials in McAllen, Texas, aired on CNN, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent Melissa Lucio showed Trump photos of such tunnels.

“Here, this is just a couple of miles from where we stand,” Lucio explained. “This is a tunnel. This is the second tunnel recently that we have located. This is an area that we actually have wall.”

Trump visited the border this week as the government shutdown over his demand for a wall along the border continued into day 20. Trump has backed off his demand for a giant concrete structure spanning the length of the border, though many experts still say his demand for a steel slat barrier is expensive and ineffective.

During his trip to the border, this President was informed by a border guard that in areas where a wall already exists, "enterprising crossers" have already been successful in building tunnels!

Given that this didn't conform to the Trump universe of "alternate facts," this President continues to insist that only "THE WALL" will keep illegals from crossing America's southern border!
