His emphasis is on a Truth encounter and not a power encounter

Today's devotional reading focuses on 'truth' ...

November 24

The Belt Of Truth

Ephesians 6:14
Having girded your loins with truth

The first piece of armor for the Christian warrior is the belt of truth. Jesus said, "I am . . . the truth" (John 14:6). And because Christ is in you, the truth is in you. However, continuing to choose truth is not always easy. Since Satan's primary weapon is the lie, your belt of truth (which holds the other pieces of body armor in place) is continually being attacked. If he can disable you in the area of truth, you become as easy target for his other attacks.

You stand firm in the truth by relating everything you do to the truth of God's Word. If a thought comes to mind which is not in harmony with God's truth, dismiss it. If an opportunity comes along to say or do something which compromises or conflicts with truth, avoid it. Adopt a simple rule of behavior: If it's the truth, I'm in; if it's not the truth, count me out.

When you learn to live in the truth on a daily basis, you will grow to love the truth because you have nothing to hide. You never have to cover up to God or anyone else; everything you do is in the light. Furthermore, when you live in the truth you dislodge the lies of Satan, the father of lies (John 8:44). Remember that if Satan can deceive you into believing a lie, he can control your life.

Jesus prayed, "I do not ask Thee to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one" (John 17:15). How? "Sanctify them in the truth; Thy Word is truth" (verse 17). You will only dislodge Satan's lies in the light of God's revelation, and not by human reasoning or research.

The only thing a Christian ever has to admit to is the truth. Walking in the light and speaking the truth in love may seem threatening to some. But in reality truth is a liberating friend and the only path to fellowship with God.

Prayer: Forgive me, Lord, for entertaining lies and walking in darkness. Give me courage to face the truth and to speak the truth in love.

Keys to Success in the Christian Life
From Neil T. Anderson, in 'The Bondage Breaker'

I will not say “I can’t,” because the Bible says I can do all things through Christ Who gives me strength
(Phil 4:13)

I will lack nothing, because God will supply all my needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus
(Phil. 4:19)

I will not fear, because God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind
(2 Tim. 1:7)

I will not lack faith to fulfill my calling, because God has allotted to me a measure of faith
(Rom. 12:3)

I will not be weak, because the Lord is the strength of my life; I will display strength and take action because I know God
(Psalm 27:1; Daniel 11:32)

I will not allow Satan to have supremacy over my life, because He that is in me (the Holy Spirit) is greater than he that is in the world (Satan)
(1 John 4:4)

I will not accept defeat, because God always leads me in triumph
(2 Cor. 2:14)

I will not lack wisdom, because Christ became wisdom to me from God, and God gives wisdom to me generously when I ask Him
(1 Cor. 1:30; James 1:5)

I will not be depressed, because I recall to mind God’s lovingkindness, compassion and faithfulness and have hope
(Lam. 3:21‐23)

I will not worry and fret because I can cast all my anxiety on Christ Who cares for me
(1 Peter 5:7)

I will never be in bondage knowing that there is liberty where the Spirit of the Lord is
(Gal. 5:1)

I will not feel condemned because the Bible says I am not condemned because I am in Christ
(Rom. 8:1)

I will never feel alone because Jesus said He is with me always and He will never leave me or forsake me
(Matt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5)

I will never feel accursed or that I am the victim of bad luck because the Bible says that Christ redeemed me from the curse of the law that I might receive His Spirit
(Gal. 3:13,14)

I will not be discontented because I, like Paul, can learn to be content in all my circumstances
(Phil. 4:11)

I will never feel worthless because I know that Christ became sin on my behalf, that I might become the righteousness of God in Him
(2 Cor. 5:21)

I will not have a persecution complex, knowing that nobody can be against me when God is for me
(Rom. 8:31)

I will not be confused, because God is the author of peace and He gives me knowledge through His indwelling Spirit
(1 Cor. 14:33; 2:12)

I will not feel like a failure because I am a conqueror in all things through Christ
(Rom. 8:37)

I will not let the pressures of life bother me because I can take courage knowing that Jesus has overcome the world and its tribulations
(John 16:33)

I'm curious, does one need the books that Neil Anderson puts out, or is the Bible enough?

I do know that I am looking at purchasing the book "Satan, You Can't Have My Children" by Iris Delgado. It's more of a devotional book.

The very question indicates your doubt on the matter, so if you doubt it right, then throw out all your books, the newspaper, television, computer, and do not listen to any sermons which may have similar non Bible passages...

then move to a monastery, and live there undisturbed, untaught by anything but the Bible...

and... esp do not read this message, for it is not in the Bible either... it is my interpretation of the verse that says:

Romans 14:23 (KJV)
...for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

We Are Saints

Romans 1:7
To all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

Have you ever heard a Christian refer to himself as "just a sinner saved by grace"? Have you referred to yourself that way? What do sinners do? They sin! If you are no different from a non-Christian, or even if you perceive yourself as no different, what will happen? Your Christian life will be mediocre at best, with little to distinguish you from a non-Christian. Satan will seize that opportunity, pour on the guilt, and convince you that you are doomed to an up-and-down spiritual existence. As a defeated Christian you will confess your sin and strive to do better, but inwardly you will admit that you are just a sinner saved by grace, hanging on until the rapture.

In Scripture, believers are called "brethren," "sons of God," "sons of light," and "saints." You are not a sinner; you are a saint who sins. "For you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8). According to that passage, we don't have an identity problem; we have a walk problem.

We become saints at the moment of salvation and live as saints in our daily experience as we continue to believe what God has done and as we continue to affirm who we really are in Christ. If you fail to see yourself as a child of God, you will struggle vainly to live like one, and Satan will have little trouble convincing you that you are no different from who you were before Christ and that you have no value to God or anyone else. But appropriating by faith the radical transformation of your core identity from sinner to saint will have a powerful, positive effect on your daily resistance to sin and Satan.

Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes that I may see myself as You see me. Then enable me to walk as a child of light.

The bible is ALWAYS the standard. It is the gold standard. If the book you are reading or the words you read/hear do not agree with the bible, than they are not worth reading.

I usually go to Amazon and read the ratings of a book. In people's evaluations there are usually some people who will rate a book according to biblical principle. You can also 'See inside' of a book and read 4 or 5 pages. That helps too.

The Acceptance Of God

John 15:20
If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you

Everyone knows what it feels like to be criticized and rejected, often by the very people in our lives we desperately want to please. We were born and raised in a worldly environment which chooses favorites and rejects seconds. And since nobody can be the best at everything, we all were ignored, overlooked or rejected at times by parents, teachers and friends.

Furthermore, since we were born in sin, even God had no relationship with us until we were accepted by Him in Christ at salvation. Since then we have been the target of Satan, the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10), who never ceases to lie to us about how worthless we are to God and others. In this life we all have to live with the pain of rejection.

The acceptance of God is not based on our performance but on His kindness and mercy. "But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy" (Titus 3:4, 5). "Wherefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God" (Romans 15:7).

The thoughts and feelings of rejection which often plague us can be major deterrents to growth and maturity if we don't learn to handle them positively. Unfortunately, instead of taking a positive approach, we all learned early in life to respond to rejection by taking one of three defensive postures. Even Christians are influenced to react defensively to the rejection they experience in their family, their school, or society in general.

Over the next several days we will look at three ineffective and unnecessary ways to respond to rejection, and consider God's plan for helping us deal with rejection from others.

Prayer:
Thank You, Lord, for Your unconditional love and acceptance. Teach me to accept others as You have accepted me.

(Neil Anderson, 'Daily in Christ')

Beating The System

Luke 14:11
Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted

A small percentage of people defend against rejection by buying into the dog-eat-dog system of the world and learning to compete and scheme to get ahead of the pack. These are the movers and shakers, people who earn acceptance and strive for significance through their performance. They feel driven to get on top of every situation because winning is their passport to acceptance. They are characterized by perfectionism and emotional insulation and they struggle with anxiety and stress.

Spiritually, the beat-the-system individual refuses to come under God's authority and has little fellowship with God. This person is committed to controlling and manipulating people and circumstances for his own ends, so it is difficult for him to yield control in his life to God. In our churches this person jockeys to be chairman of the ruling board or the most influential member on a committee. His motivation is not to serve God in this position, however, but to control his world because his self-worth is dependent on it. Beat-the-system controllers are some of the most insecure people you will meet.

Sadly, the controlling individual's defensive strategy only delays inevitable rejection. Eventually his ability to control his family, his employees, and his church diminishes and he is replaced by a younger, stronger controller. Some survive this mid-life crisis, but many who make it to retirement don't enjoy much of it. Studies show that high-powered executives live an average of nine months after they retire. They base their lives in the world system they seek to conquer, but inevitably the world claims its own. "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ" (Colossians 2:8).

Prayer:
Gracious Lord, teach me to be in this world but not of it. I choose Your kingdom to be my standard.

Giving In To The System

1 Peter 2:4
And coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected by men, but choice and precious in the sight of God

"Pastor, I'm a loser," a high school boy told me dejectedly. He explained that he wanted to be a star football player, but had been cut from the team. Instead of being in the spotlight as an athlete, he had to settle for being a member of the pep band. And compared to star quarterbacks, clarinet players were losers at his school.

The largest group of people today respond to rejection like this boy did: by simply giving in to the system. They continue their efforts to try to earn approval, but the inevitable rejection by others prompts them to believe that they really are unlovable and rejectable. The system says that the best, the strongest, the most beautiful, and the most talented are "in". Those who don't fit those categories--which includes most of us--are "out", and we succumb to society's false judgment of our worth. As a result, a large segment of the population is plagued by feelings of worthlessness, inferiority and self-condemnation.

This person may have trouble relating to God. If he blames God for his state, it will be difficult to trust Him. "You made me a lowly clarinet player instead of a star quarterback," he complains. "If I trust You with other areas of my life, how do I know You won't make me a loser there too?"

By giving in to the system's false judgment, this person can only look forward to more and more rejection. He has bought the lie and he even rejects himself. Therefore, any success or acceptance which comes his way will be questioned or doubted on the basis of what he already believes about himself.

God has not equally distributed gifts, talents or intelligence, but He has equally distributed Himself. Our sense of worth comes from knowing who we are as children of God. "See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are" (1 John 3:1).

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for creating me the way You have and for making me Your child. I find my worth in You.

Rebelling Against The System

Isaiah 1:19-20
If you consent and obey, you will eat the best of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword

The third way people respond to rejection is to rebel against the system. They accurately sense the injustice of the world system.

Since the 1960s, this segment of society seems to be growing. These are the rebels and the dropouts who respond to rejection by saying, "I don't need you or your love." Deep inside they still crave acceptance, but they refuse to acknowledge their need. They will often underscore their defiance and rebellion by dressing and behaving in ways which are objectionable to the general population.

The rebel is marked by self-hatred and bitterness. He wishes he had never been born. He is irresponsible and undisciplined. He sees God as just another tyrant, someone else trying to squeeze him into a socially acceptable mold. He rebels against God just like he rebels against everyone else, because he sees God as a part of the establishment.

This person's rebellious attitude and behavior tend to alienate others and push them to defend the system he rejects. The establishment doesn't like to have the status quo questioned. So when the rebel criticizes the government or the schools, the establishment rises to defend them. But what is there to defend? When the rebel says the system is unfair, he's right. The world system is governed by the god of this world. It is hard, cold and rejecting.

We are to submit to and pray for the governing authorities so that it may be well with us (1 Peter 2:18-21); 1 Timothy 2:1-4). But the means by which we evaluate ourselves and the standards by which we live are not of this world.

Prayer:
Lord, I pray for a submissive spirit and the wisdom to live my life according to the standards of Your kingdom.

The Fear That Expels All Others

Proverbs 14:26
In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, and his children will have refuge

I was conducting a conference for the leadership of one of America's flagship churches. The pastor is one of the most gifted Bible teachers I know and his staff is among the best. I asked the 165 leaders present if they had ever experienced a direct encounter with something they knew was demonic, such as a frightening presence in their room or an evil voice in their mind. Ninety-five percent answered yes. I went one step further to ask how many had been frightened by something pressing on them that they couldn't immediately respond to physically. At least a third raised their hand. Are these Christian leaders mentally ill? No, and neither are you or your children when you struggle against demonic influences in your life.

We warn our children about strangers in the streets. Don't you think we should warn them about "strangers" in their rooms? Our research suggests that 50 percent of Christian kids have encountered an evil presence in their rooms. Most of my students at seminary have had such an experience, and by the time they complete my class on resolving spiritual conflicts, several tell about having such an experience that semester. Would you know what to do if you or your child was terrorized by a presence alone at night? Do you fear such a possibility?

Most people fear demonic things they can't see, but have no fear of God. That's just the opposite of what Scripture commands. We are told to fear the Lord (Proverbs 1:7), but we are never told to fear Satan. Fear of the devil is an inappropriate response to the reality of the spiritual world. Knowing his schemes and learning to resist him and take authority over him is the biblical response.

Isaiah 8:13, 14, reads, "It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, and He shall be your dread. Then He shall become a sanctuary". The fear of the Lord is the one fear that expels all other fears.

Prayer:
Lord, You are the only legitimate fear-object in my life. You are the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent God.

The Spiritual Problem Of Rebellion

1 Samuel 15:23
Rebellion is as the sin of divination (witchcraft), and insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry

If you fail to bring your child under control during his early years, problems may not show up until he hits the age of identity, around 12. Most parents respond at this time by trying to control the child. But the authoritarian parent is most likely to produce a rebel. "But we have to reprove rebellious kids, don't we?" Actually, the Bible tells us not to reprove a scoffer (Proverbs 9:7-9). Why? Because rebellion is a spiritual problem, and it requires a spiritual solution.

Saul, the first king of Israel, rebelled against God by doing his own things, making his own rules, and worshipping the way he wanted to. God sent a prophet to confront him. Part of the prophet's stinging rebuke was, "Rebellion is as the sin of divination [witchcraft], and insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry" (1 Samuel 15:23). As a result of Saul's disobedience, "an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him" (1 Samuel 16:14).

God can use any means He chooses to discipline His children. Even Satan and his evil spirits can be an instrument in the hands of God (1 Corinthians 5:5). I'm not suggesting that you turn your child over to Satan. But willful disobedience usually cannot be dealt with by human reasoning. Have you ever tried to reason with a rebellious child? Prayer is our weapon for bringing down strongholds raised up against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

Consult Your God

Mark 13:22
False Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order, if possible, to lead the elect astray

You can identify a false prophet by the fact that not all his prophecies come true. Deuteronomy 18:22 instructs us not to believe the prophet whose prophecies fail. But Deuteronomy 13:1-3 also warns us about the false prophet whose signs and wonders do come true: "If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them', you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the LORD your God is testing you to find out if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul." (See also Matthew 24:4-11, 23-25; Revelation 13:11-14).

Many Christians have become conditioned to think that anything relating to the miraculous automatically verifies that God is involved. God can still use signs and wonders to confirm the Word, but the Bible also warns that false Christs and prophets will arise seeking to lead believers astray with their "signs and wonders". Satan can also perform signs and wonders, but he only does so to direct our worship away from God to himself. Deuteronomy 13:5-11 reveals the seriousness of attributing to God the activity of Satan. Persons who were involved in it were to be executed even if they were relatives. We are to love God, obey His Word, and test all signs, wonders and dreams. Isaiah wrote, "When they say to you, 'Consult the mediums and the wizards who whisper and mutter', should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn" (8:19,20).

Prayer:
Lord, I affirm my commitment to know Your Word and be led by Your Spirit. I ask for discernment and wisdom to test all things.
