Tanks arrive in D.C. for Trump's Fourth of July celebration

WASHINGTON — Tanks for President Donald Trump’s “Salute to America” Fourth of July celebration were seen arriving in Washington on Tuesday morning, just days before the event is scheduled to take place.

NBC News captured video of the tanks — two Bradley and two Abrams tanks — purportedly en route to the National Mall for Thursday’s event. Also in transport are support vehicles, including an M88, used to help recover heavy armored vehicles.

A photographer for the Associated Press also spotted two M1A1 Abrams tanks along with four other military vehicles on a freight train in southeast D.C. on Monday night.

On Monday, Trump told reporters that tanks would be stationed outside of the Fourth of July celebration, but gave no further details.

Two U.S. defense officials familiar with the planning confirmed that Trump's remarks at Thursday's event are expected to be roughly 20 minutes long, with approximately four minutes dedicated to each service of the military.

The defense officials also said that different branches of the military are expected to provide air assets for the the Fourth of July celebration: the Army will bring four Apache helicopters; the Navy will bring two F-35s and two F/A-18s; the Air Force will supply a B-2 bomber, two F-22s, and the Air Force One plane; the Marine Corps will bring the new Marine One that is still in test and evaluation phase, as well as two V-22 Ospreys; the Coast Guard will have a Jayhawk and a Dolphin helicopter as well as a turboprop plane; and the Navy's Blue Angels will close out the aerial review with six F/A-18 Hornets, featuring as many as 16 pilots.

The military hardware will be transported from bases around the country, ranging as close as Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to as far away as the Naval Air Station in California.

With the increased air traffic in Washington on Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration said that it would suspend operations at the Ronald Reagan National Airport, the closest commercial airport to D.C., from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. ET. Operations at the airport will also be impacted from 9:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. ET, during the fireworks show.

This isn't anything new. Our country has done this plenty of times in the past.

Howitzers on the streets in '46

Pershing missiles rolled the streets in '61.

M1 tanks with Humvee's and rocket launchers in '91

That's just to name a few times, but there has been more than that. Albeit, I would say they are followed by victories usually, but I see no problem with them at all. Might bring in some good business for the shops there with an increase in customer/sight seer traffic.

President Trump Has Tanks for Fourth of July Event That Could Damage Washington, DC

“You’ve got to be pretty careful with the tanks because the roads have a tendency not to like to carry heavy tanks,” he said. “So we have to put them in certain areas, but we have the brand new Sherman tanks and we have the brand new Abrams tanks.”
It's unclear how the M4 Sherman tanks, which, according to the Military Times, went out of service in 1957, are going to be "brand new." No matter—make the sale. The Abrams is currently the main U.S. battle tank, according to the AP, but the Military Times says it came online in 1980.

Pentagon officials declined to comment on Monday as they wrestled with how to accommodate the president’s tank request only a few days before the event. Among the logistical concerns was how to transport tanks that weigh more than 60 tons into the popular downtown area where tourists gather to see the monuments. Moving and guarding the tanks would require staffing at a time when many troops are at home for the holiday.

Another problem is that Arlington Memorial Bridge, which spans the Potomac River and connects Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, might not be able to hold the weight.

While it would be something of a tragedy—the Memorial Bridge was built in 1932 ahead of the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, marks the western end of the National Mall, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places—watching a piece of American infrastructure collapse under the weight of American military spending would be quite a metaphor for our current state of affairs. In fact, the bridge is "crumbling" and in grave need of rehabilitation, which the Feds approved in 2018. Without the rehab, authorities said it would have to be turned into a footbridge in the next few years. So yeah, throw some 60-ton tanks on it.

I hope the streets do not get damaged or a bridge collapse. One tank didn't go under an overpass and had to be moved over it with a crane.

The Tanks are M1 Abrams not Shermans. It is our most modern tank as there have been dozens of upgrades, refits and completely new manufacturing.
The bridges held up fine in 1991. As long as the low-boys don't turn on a curb the roads should hold just fine. The M1A1s and Bradleys will be on low-boy trailers and not under their own power. Again this has been done before in 1991.
The Memorial bridge is an option but not the only one.
When and where did this happen? The armored vehicles came by rail.

Trump said that Shermans were coming, but he is probably wrong. I quoted him.

It has been 28 years since 1991. There is reasonable concern about the bridge. I hope it will be fine.

You did and he is wrong, or someone tried to talk him into having a tank there which weighs a third or more less than an Abrams.
Me too! For over a year I ran across that bridge from the Pentagon through the Mall up and around Capitol Hill.

It has been 28 years, but trust in the US Army Combat Engineers to get the job done.

If they're "brand new" Abrams tanks, they'll be M1A2s, presumably.

Is it your impression this is the first parade in DC associated with armored vehicles and military aircraft flyovers?

On July 4th - yes...at least in our lifetimes. And traditionally, it's the people's day to celebrate on the National Mall.

At first trying to squint at the bumper numbers thought these were National Guard. But the report says they came from Fort Stewart GA. If so then these tanks would be the M1A2 SEPV3 from 3rd Infantry Division (MECH).

    So you are correct sir.

...because America is strong when we celebrate our democratic values, not military props used to appease a President's whims.
