Nobody said it was a formal church. I think it's possible that some smaller churches are like that and are afraid to let anyone into their group.

She said it was a small Presbyterian church. My experience in Presbyterian churches is that they are more formal and traditional. I have a whole side of my family that is Presbyterian and when I was young, I would have described them as cold, stuffy, and unfriendly. I know better now and can appreciate some of the formalities and reverences that goes with being an old traditional church.

I came out of a reformed Presbyterian church and while I wouldn't say the people there were unfriendly, their doctrinal distinctives would be off putting to many.
