That tailoring program sounds incredible! My daughters and I do the Samaritan's Purse Christmas shoeboxes every year. After hearing suggestions for items to include in the boxes, we always put enough sewing supplies for a teenage girl to learn to hand sew. Having a skill like this could translate to putting food on the table.

As far as tangible things, I usually give to a local shelter for homeless women. That includes things they request like art materials, along with more practical items. They never ask for things that would help with a vocation. That's the difference between this country and third world countries. Even our "poor" are often comparatively well off.
