Tacoma Police Charged with Murder in Case Where Black Man Said He Couldn't Breathe
The Washington state attorney general on Thursday charged two Tacoma police officers with murder and one with manslaughter in the death of Manuel Ellis, a Black man who died after telling them he couldn't breathe as he was being restrained.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed charges of second-degree murder against Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins, and first-degree manslaughter against Timothy Rankine.

Well, Takoma is right in the liberal-dominated part of Washington State, with Seattle next door, so things don't look good for the defendants.
Maybe, but active BLM activists or something like that have no business in an impartial jury.

In Washington we just call the liberal part of the state--the western side of the Cascade Mountains--Washington. East of the Cascades is just western Idaho.

When all the police have been imprisoned, what then?
I think this is disrespectful to the police officers that don't beat and brutalize the population. Most police officers don't brutalize civilians, we should not confuse the actions of these officers with good policing.

When all the police have been imprisoned, what then?

Why would "all the police" be imprisoned?

And why do people act like everything is a zero sum game, where it's all or nothing?

Why can't we have better institutions for local law enforcement and public safety? Whether that involves radical police reform or building up a better system from the ground up; the point is that this isn't a black and white dichotomy.

It's very clear that law enforcement of some form is necessary for a functioning society. It's also very clear that law enforcement in America is massively dysfunctional--to put it mildly.

If the public is terrified of those sworn to "serve and protect" that very public, then something is wrong.

Cleared in Black man’s death, Tacoma officers will get $500,000 to resign

Three police officers cleared of criminal charges in the death of Manuel Ellis in Tacoma, Wash., will each receive $500,000 as part of voluntary resignation agreements with the city, according to documents released Tuesday.

Two of the officers, Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins, were found not guilty last month of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. The third officer, Timothy Rankine, who responded as backup and helped to restrain Ellis, was found not guilty of first-degree manslaughter.

The Pierce County medical examiner ruled Ellis’s death a homicide caused by oxygen deprivation from physical restraint, The Washington Post reported.

The police department determined that the three men did not violate the Tacoma Police Department’s use-of-force policy when they approached Ellis, stunned him twice with a Taser and handcuffed him. While Ellis was already restrained, Rankine allegedly placed one knee in the middle of Ellis’s spine and the other near the base of his neck.

In a statement, Tacoma Police Chief Avery Moore said Tuesday that “the Use of Force policy in place in March of 2020 failed to serve the best interests of the police department or the community.”

“However, because it was policy at the time, it guided my decisions announced today,” he said, adding that the policy has since been amended.

Both Seattle and Tacoma police departments have a severe shortage of officers. Just go to the academy and you to can get a ration of bad will for trying to control societies worst impulses.

You're assuming that they are all criminals like these guys seem to be. In fact, only a minority of them are thugs and/or racists. But they can do a lot of damage because we put a lot of trust in the police. That needs to be fixed.

In the above case, those officers seem to have enjoyed going with their worst impulses.

They did indeed. That is why I advocate for more schooling and better career planing for officers. We should not have people who are empowered to shoot others who get less training then the people who cut our hair.
