BBC News - Syria crisis: UN report to confirm chemical arms attack

A UN report expected next week will "overwhelmingly" confirm that chemical weapons were used in Syria last month, the secretary general says.

Ban Ki-moon made no comment on who was to blame for the 21 August attack in the Ghouta area of Damascus, as that is not part of the report's remit.

But he did say Syria's president was guilty of "crimes against humanity".

The US and Russian foreign ministers are continuing their talks on a plan to make safe Syria's chemical weapons.

A spokeswoman for Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Geneva would head into the night, adding: "They are working on some real substance."

'Accountability'
Washington and its allies accuse the Syrian government of killing hundreds of people in a chemical attack in Ghouta. The government denies the allegation, blaming rebels.

Interesting to see where it'll go from here. Also interesting to note that it's impossible to know who used chemical weapons.

Actually, it's possible to make a conclusion based on who has this capability...

"We have associated one type of munition cited in the UN report - 122 mm rockets - with previous regime attacks," she said. "We have reviewed thousands of open source videos related to the current conflict in Syria and have not observed the opposition manufacturing or using this style of rocket."

British U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said the rocket samples examined had a payload of 350 liters (92 gallons), which was 35 times the amount used in the Tokyo subway attack in 1995.

...
Amy Smithson, a chemical weapons expert at Monterey Institute, said the August 21 attack bore "so many hallmarks of a military trained in chemical warfare doctrine" and not an untrained force. She said the army has chemical delivery systems the rebels lack.

From what I understand the US, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are supplying Syrian rebels with money and weapons and mercenary fighters. Maybe Assad decided to use chemical weapons against children so more countries would help the rebels who are trying to depose him. Or maybe he is crazy and decided to use chemical weapons on the children... or... maybe there is another explanation for who used the chemical weapons and why they did it.

U.S. intelligence agencies involved in chemical attack in Syria

By debatableopinion August 31st, 2013 13:24
In the message August 22 Eugene Furst congratulates Col. on successful operation and refers him to Wasington Post publication about chemical attack in Syria. From the Anthony’s wife dialog with her friend it’s clear the video with the children killed in the chemical attack near Damascus was staged by U.S. Intelligence.

Published data indicate Washington is willing to do anything to achieve its goals in the Middle East. Support for the Syrian opposition with political means and weapons hasn’t brought the expected results.
