Supreme Court halts turnover of Trump tax returns

Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. granted the administration’s request to stay the federal appeals court ruling against Mr. Trump until “further order”.
...
“Given the temptation to dig up dirt on political rivals, intrusive subpoenas into personal lives of presidents will become our new normal in times of divided government — no matter which party is in power. If every committee chairman is going to have this unbounded authority, this court should be the one to say so,” Mr. Trump’s lawyers argued in court papers last week

If the NY officials had not been spewing hate at Trump for such a long time they might have gotten away with this....I believe they sunk their own ship. This might even have spillover on wealthy people who transfer their residency to low tax states since these same officials have been auditing those returns.

Not clear to me what you are talking about. The Supreme court put a hold on the release whilst they consider the case, exactly the same way they and every other court does in this situation. There's no final decision been made. You think the supreme court took up the case because of something some NY officials said?

Even the media acknowledges that.....

he New York State Assembly passed a bill on Wednesday to make six years of President Donald Trump's state tax records available to Congress.

The TRUST Act, which passed the State Senate earlier this month and now makes its way to Governor Andrew Cuomo's desk, would allow the commissioner of the New York Department of Taxation and Finance to release Trump's state tax returns to the chair of the federal House Ways and Means Committee, the Senate Finance Committee and the Joint Committee on Taxation for any "specified and legitimate legislative purpose."

"Donald Trump and his administration are doing everything they can to conceal the truth about his finances and massive conflicts of interest by illegally blocking Congress from obtaining his tax returns," wrote progressive advocacy group Stand Up America in a statement. "In order to circumvent this stonewalling, New York lawmakers are providing a new avenue for the House Ways and Means Committee to obtain these crucial financial documents. As soon as this bill becomes law, all Chairman [Richard]Neal will have to do is ask."

New York just passed a law that requires the release of President Donald Trump's tax returns to Congress

Under a 1924 federal tax law, § 6103 of title 26 of the United States Code, Congress may request copies of anyone's tax returns. The treasury secretary is legally obliged to provide the tax returns, and there is no apparent legal mechanism to deny Congress's request.

Not sure how the SCOTUS will address this. They can't make laws or do away with laws.

Several states have proposed bills that would require presidential candidates to release their tax returns in order to be listed on the 2020 ballot; such a bill was passed by the California Legislature and signed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.[6]

Eventually the Supreme Court will have to rule on whether or not the President is above the law --- or maybe just this President.

Fortunately, states cannot unilaterally change the requirements specified in the US Constitution as to who is eligible to hold that office.

The question on the court will have to address is does that include when that requested tax return is to be used as a political or financial weapon. I think they will find that law only applies for a legitiment
congressional purpose which Congress has so far failed to specify. And of course they can make or do away with laws; they do so all the time by finding a law unconstitutional or ordering a specified corrective action (think busing).

Or maybe that the Dems have simply over stepped their authority.......

They aren't attempting to. But the states have unilateral constitutional authority to decide the qualifications for appearing on the ballot.

Each state has their own election laws. It's too late for Michael Bloomberg to get on the ballot in some states. If you're not on the ballot then you just can't compete for those electoral votes.

You could compete for those electoral votes. You just have to do it as a write in candidate. Lisa Murkowski got her senate seat by winning as a write in in Alaska.
