Suppose we gave you abortion.

Suppose the Left was willing to give you abortion--no questions asked, you could write any laws about it you wanted. Which of the other "hot button" Christian issues would you be willing to give in return? Gun control? Single-payer health care? Amnesty for Central American refugees? Politics is the art of compromise. What have you got to offer?

I know, right? Where are these coming from?
The "wish list" of Trump's Christian Right supporters:

No abortion
No "out" LGBTs
No amnesty for Central American refugees
No gun control
No single-payer health care
No action on global warming
No DACA
...etc.

Apparently, for conservative Christians--it's socialism, don't you know.

And according to nochristian conservatives, what is it? What about the wish list of nonchristian Trump supporters? What about Christian Right non-Trumpers?

Are there any? Christian Right non-Trump supporters, I mean?

Never mind. You don't have to think of them as Christian Issues if you don't want; call them 'social conservative' issues if you like that better, but they are definitely the top Republican issues.

It's only a thought experiment, anyway. Abortion is clearly the most important--just given the number of posters in this forum who declare they will vote for Trump no matter what because of abortion. But what about the rest? Which ones would you give up for a free hand to criminalize abortion?

So far the only offer is amnesty for Central American refugees. Personally, I don't think that's enough. I would consider single payer health care--presuming it included birth control and pre-and post-natal care, and comprehensive sex-ed in the schools as a lagniappe, all of which would reduce the demand for abortion anyway.

What I'd want:

1) A Constitutional amendment eliminating the Electoral College and stipulating that the President/VP are elected by majority of the popular vote. And in another section, it will require that nominees be chosen by the voters in a national primary election.

2) A Constitutional amendment requiring Congress to set a spending limit by Presidential campaigns. The baseline will be the total spent in the Presidential election immediately before the amendment takes effect. The limit cannot exceed 10% more than was spent in each subsequent election. And in another section, state legislatures are required to apply the same rules to state elections for governors, senators, and House reps.

3) A Constitutional amendment requiring that donors of $100 or more to any candidate for national or statewide office be identified by name, address, amount donated, and recipient of the donation. Any PAC or other other organization making a donation must similarly identify its members, and the amount each member contributed. (This is the Citizens United negation amendment.)

4) A Constitutional amendment requiring states to draw House districts only in a manner that equalizes population in each district as much as possible. (This is the anti-gerrymandering amendment.)

These would be a good start.

Yeah well... Fantasyland isn't just a part of Disney's theme parks, I suppose.

I'd be willing to accept a compromise on this one. Keep the electoral college, but eliminate the "winner-take-all" nature and require that each state split their electoral votes like Maine and Nebraska currently do.

The reason I'd accept this change is that the electoral college was originally created in part because in the late 1700s, the US simply didn't have the logistics to manage a single nationwide election. We do now, of course, but we've seen how easy it is for those logistics to break down (Pandemic) or become compromised (President Donald). I can see the wisdom of doing the election in stages, but splitting electoral votes will produce a more accurate count.

Is being against single-payer a known "Christian" position?
Yes. At least at my last church. You know....evangelicals.... suffer the children....caring for the least of these.... that’s what mission work is for..., in third world America.

And I want to marry Scarlett Johansson. The odds for my wishes coming true may be better than yours.

I don't know if it qualifies as any more of a "Christian issue" than gun control, but I think a deal on environmental policy has potential here. A case can be made that it even intersects with abortion, since high mercury levels in drinking water have been known to lead to birth defects.

You're dealing with people whose religion and politics are so intertwined they think their political positions come straight from God Himself... which means no compromise is possible.

I hear ya. My girl was Zooey Deschanel. But just a hook-up. Not to marry.

A version of my #3 proposed amendment actually exists. Every year since 2013, Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico has introduced an amendment that would empower Congress to regulate campaign financing. It hasn't gone anywhere yet. But...do you remember the old pop song Our Day Will Come? (Ruby and the Romantics, 1962.) In time, the end for Citizen's United will come.
