these are amazing phenomena's in nature.
I've heard of the term 'sun dog' but I've never seen one. Until today I had no idea what they looked like.
Are these photos what you would actually see or is part of the image caused by flare/reflection in the camera lens?

Yes indeed some may not be so intense, you might have seen the less intense ones like this a sun dog nonetheless. I have seen a ton of the less magnitude ones.

Argg , that's a bummer, i live in a mid range area per say between the equator and the upper north, might be a reason i only see the less intense ones not a lot of ice crystals in the atmosphere but enough to produce smaller versions.I looked up 'sun dog' to see what caused them. It seems you need ice crystals in the atmosphere. That explains why I've never seen one. Where I live the climate is rated as sub tropical - it doesn't get that cold.
