Go into Windows Explorer (My Computer; there should also be a link to it in the Accessories folder), expand or open the C: drive, and create a new folder. Then just move the stuff from your desktop to the folder you just created.

My personal suggestion: use the Folders view. It makes navigating Windows Explorer far less cumbersome. For that matter, I also advocate using the Classic layout for XP instead of the default for precisely the same reason.
