Trump: US, France and UK launch strikes on Syria - CNNPolitics

CNN said:
"I ordered the United States armed forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of Syrian dictator of Bashar al-Assad," Trump said from the White House Diplomatic Room.

Trump said the strikes were in coordination with France and the United Kingdom, adding that the purpose of the campaign is to "establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons."

"The combined American, British and French response to these atrocities will integrate all instruments of our national power: military, economic and diplomatic," Trump said.
Trump indicated the strikes would continue until the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons ends.

Wow....tonight's the night he became president [/sarcasm]

There's also this:

Trump’s Military Strike on Syria Will Be Illegal

The Daily Beast said:
Trump’s casus belli is the apparent chemical weapons assault Assad launched on the Damascus suburb of Douma on Saturday. That assault, from which at least 70 are dead after an estimated 500 people were exposed, is “correctly characterized as a war crime,” said Mary Ellen O’Connell, an international law specialist at the University of Notre Dame. But that doesn’t mean the U.S. can legally respond, absent a United Nations Security Council resolution, which Assad’s ally Russia will veto.

“Military force against Syria will violate international law just as surely as the use of chemical weapons. President Trump wants to enforce the law by breaking it,” O’Connell said.

Forget Bolton (man do I wish I could use harsher language than 'forget', but of course, I'm on CF). Civvies are the ones who usually bear the biggest brunt of war, but I wouldn't expect cowardly chickenhawks like Bolton and Orange Occupant to know that.

I don't know what is going to happen. But I have had a couple of dreams (at night) about a war with Russia, and it being linked to the end times. So I certainly have question about what could happen. In one of my dreams I saw Russian civilians celebrating a war victory over my country Australia, and I saw a blood soaked Australian Sporting flag, it is interesting that we are holding the commonwealth games (a sporting event) at the same time that war may be breaking out, just a thought.

The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. - Albert Einstein

Many people have said something similar to him in history.

It's certainly not an easy statement to live up too. It's scary in fact when you look at what happened last night.

I don't see this through political lenses, because at times you must stand up against evil of this sort. Human nature likes to take the easy avenue, and not get involved. There are plenty of reasons for that. Goodness knows I also hesitated over this. Who wouldn't if they were sane.

It's so much easier to call out other types of evil knowing someone won't retaliate in ways we fear. I can't believe this was an easy decision for anyone. We couldn't just hashtag, name call, and label these evil acts out of existence. Syria could care less, and their partners in crime don't care anymore so.

I would hope anyone in power would take a stand against using chemical weapons - an agreement the globe has had since WWI. Vocalizing it and then backing it up? Not easy and very scary. The principal is a moral one though.

Sigh.

Wow. This is bad.

One curious detail is that there were no deaths. This suggests to me that, behind the scenes, to avoid escalating the situation, we must have told the Russians/Syrians when and where it was going to happen so the places could be evacuated.

So hopefully it's not too bad after all. Some sketchy sites get blasted, jingoistic Americans high-five each other, the message gets across to Assad, but it was done in a way that won't escalate to Really Bad (TM).

I was watching the briefing this morning. Sounds like they waited until 3am knowing that most people would not be present at their targets.

It's early yet about the deaths. They said that Assad shot off missiles after the strikes, and they had to land somewhere. I'm not looking forward to that news.
