So one of my friends recently stopped being my friend when he learned I was from Canada. It didn't matter to him that I've lived on American soil as a dual citizen for nearly 30 years. I was Canadian so I was trash. My father in law has the same opinion and some people are discriminated against because they're Black or Asian? I get discriminated against because I happen to have a Canadian accent (Not as strong as my dad's) and because my mother decided to have me in Canada. America's toilet.

I'm getting a little sick of Americans bashing the country I was born in and calling it insignificant and treating us like we're trash on the side of the road. I'm sick of being made fun of being Canadian and I'm getting a little sick of being told that I have to be loyal to a president now when the first almost 10 years of my life I was loyal to a Prime Minister (who I barely even knew who it was in the 80's) and the Queen of England.\

Most of the discrimination? Is because we have an inferior military. Let me tell you something, Just because Canada refuses to make nuclear weapons doesn't mean its military is inferior. If anything I think its proves we're a little bit smarter than the US for refusing to make weapons that cost hundreds of billions of dollars to develop and make better on... something that will probably NEVER be used! I mean, you could solve your healthcare problem if you stopped developing nuclear weapons and wasting hundreds of billions of dollars (If not trillions) making weapons that will NEVER be used in warfare. Because, if you did it would apparently mean the end of the world. So... why again?

Canada also like the states, hasn't lost a single war its been in either. We also have been in many wars just like you have and haven't lost a war like you haven't either despite you technically losing Vietnam and the Gulf war. I don't call pulling out of a war to keep your flawless win record a victory, sorry.

Yes, I'm aware that Canada fought among the British in the Revolutionary war, a war that you won. But, I'm sorry, I don't call the Revolutionary war a victory for the Americans when you used extremely poor and unfair tactics to win said war. I don't call hiding in the bushes and ambushing British soldiers catching them off guard actual warfare. Had the Patriots actually fought like men they would have died and it would have been impossible for them to win the war against Britain. You realized this so you fought like cowards in a vain attempt to win a war that was technically impossible to win (Not to mention pointless).

Also? In WWII if it wasn't for England and it's allies (*cough* Canada) backing you up? You would have lost major important battles that you were losing and needed backup for. You might have lost the war had you had no backup. So your military isn't as perfect as you see it as. Also, Canadian scientists even played a role in helping you invent the abomb which helped win the war several years earlier than it would have normally taken.

For such an inferior army I also seem to recall then President Bush one of his first acts after he declared war on Afghanistan and later Iraq was, begging the Canadians and British to come help him win the war. Ok fine, help him *in* the war. Canada refused for the first time in American history and Bush threw a candy fit over it. (Canada is in the war on terror now once we actually had a good prime minister (Trudeau) and you had a good President (Obama)).

I mean, when does the bashing end between Canadians and Americans? When will Americans start to see that Canada is actually a great ally who has helped them through nearly every war that they've been involved in and played a key role in their victory? Why do they say that if they declared war on Canada it wouldn't even be a remote fight? It would be, because even if we do have an "inferior" army, who do you think would back us up? That's right, Great Britain.

I mean... nobody questions how powerful Great Britain is... I mean... come on use your heads.

And then Canadians always bash Americans for their abysmal health care and how much doctors get paid (It's ridiculous compared to how much Canadian doctors get paid. Nobody deserves to make over $250,000 a year while others starve to death.) and how much their college costs (It costs $25,000 in Canada for the same education that costs over $250,000 here in a key University like Mc Gill university which is basically your Harvard or Yale.) how much tuition is, and books ...etc.

I know my grandfather did so until his dying breath. My cousin close to my age does it all the time. When we moved to America he did nothing but bash me and my family for years even though technically my Father didn't give up his Canadian citizenship to move and my sister and I are Dual Citizens and can freely move between both countries as we pleased. The only American in our family was my mother and he didn't dare insult my mother.

But, this is no different than Ontarioians's (That's what I call people from Ontario) opinion of the Quebecois. I (and many of my fellow schoolmates from Ontario) grew up hating people from Quebec and people from Quebec grew up hating us it was no different than Americans hating Canadians and treating them like their national toilet. It's just... ridiculous! I now see its ridiculous! Just because someone is French and thinks you're inferior doesn't mean that you should think the same as them. It's just... idk ridiculous.

It's just all discrimination and while this world is going on a one way trip to hell, one thing I agree with is, NOBODY should be discriminated against. Whether its where they're from, what the color of their skin is, or what they like to do for fun and entertainment, how they worship God (I mean among Christians). It's just... RIDICULOUS! Sorry for the rant, I just had to. I have to spread the word that Canadians are people too. Not your own personal toilet that you can disregard as being inferior wads of toilet paper. Thank you!

I'm not aware of Canadian discrimination.

I would say we generally like you Canucks. Politics is the only area where I can think of personally at times not liking some Canadians ;because, some folks are really active (to the point of obsession), opinionated and outspoken in our politics without actually living here! Other than that, sure they're probably some "ugly Americans" out there that give Canadians a bad time. But in general, I think we tend to think of Canadians as being like Americans (from the Midwest), that in general have better manners and grammar, and less firearms, eh. ;)

PS - Your post seems like an attack on lots of people that haven't done anything to you. e.g. talking about Vietnam and "loosing wars" etc. is kind of like picking a fight, or venting on lots of nice innocent people. It kind of reminds me of the saying that people "become what they hate".

In my 52 years, I’ve never met anyone who discriminated against Canadians or had such a negative view of Canada. And I used to travel there frequently for about two years. None of my coworkers had anything negative to say.

So I don’t think this is a widespread problem.

I like Canadians; had a wonderful online friend from Canada many years ago.
I remember she told me she was taking a vacation to Cuba and I was like "Cuba! You can't go there!" and she was like "no, You can't go there!" lol
She also told me Canadians burned the white house once, maybe that was war of 1812 not sure might have been some Canadians on the brit side.
Anyway, I'm not a nationalist, so I don't have problems with other nations and enjoy the perspectives. There's a lot of socialism fear-mongering here, so I'm sure the nationalists among us like to point to Canada and strawman stomp it more than ever.

Mostly I don't think aboot it too much ;)
South Park Canadians are very funny but I'm pretty sure your heads don't really flap like that.

My gf is actually French-Canadian (her top half is Canadian and her bottom half is French). She's lived most of her life here in US though. What's funny is she had a DUI at one point years ago, and they won't let her cross the border again to visit until she gets some paperwork cleared ;) I get to tease her about this, but we are hoping to visit sometime, I've never been.

Where are you encountering discrimination? If memory serves you talk to a lot of people online and that may be the problem. Most people have little interest in someone's place of birth. Not to the point where they'd argue or end a friendship.

And your OP does the things you criticize. You're posting on an American site with a population largely comprised of US citizens. I think you could make the point without throwing us under the bus.

Yours in His Service,

~bella

The military differences go far beyond nukes.

And there's the rub. The post-war order that America helped establish, among other things, requires America to be World Police. So, whereas other countries who live under the protection of our graces are free to invest their money in healthcare, public works, etc., that's rly not an option for America. Because when you rise to the top (or near to it), it takes a lot of military spending to stay there.

The fact that Canada (or any comparable country) has resources freed up to spend on likely better healthcare than America has is no sign of enlightenment on Canada's collective part. Rather, it's a recognition that Canada's proximity to America makes it an unattractive target. Hence, the Canadian government has the flexibility to invest their resources elsewhere since military spending in Canada doesn't completely make sense.

Yeah that thing irks me. Especially with other countries like Germany, especially in the 80s before the Berlin Wall came down, they were protesting us and our nukes, not appreciating we were keeping the Soviets from reverse Blitzkrieging them through the Fulda Gap.

:) It kinda strikes me that our nation has a relationship with the rest of the Free World that is kind of like a parent that is somewhat annoying to their adolescent son or daughter growing up. Basically Uncle Sam pays for the necessities, but lecture his son or daughter, and also brag to them about the things they accomplished in a way that is unseemly at times.

But there is a new parent, a giant Panda Bear ,aka China, that will most likely be taking over in the years ahead. That parent is some ways is more superficially mannerly, but in secret actually quite abusive. We will see how the rest of the "Free World" fairs when a Communist power (Albeit a business friendly one) takes over as the World's Super Power. Some day, people around the World may long for the days of American hegemony....

I too am of the opinion that hostility towards Canadians isn't typical of Americans.

To the extent that you feel it, I am wondering if it has at least something to do with where you live or if you are thinking of what certain acquaintances are like but not Americans in general.

However, I did also pick up some rather meanspirited digs in your post aimed at the United States, which from a person who holds US Citizenship and seems to think it meaningful is the kind of thing that invites a reaction from listeners.

If you are going to make lauding Canada above what's reasonable while also denigrating the United States, and you do this in ordinary conversation, what do you expect? I'm confident that if any of us were to go to Canada, make it our permanent home, and then talk down the country in favor of the country from which we'd emigrated, the reaction from some of the locals would be similar. It's human nature, regardless of which country is involved. Not that that's fair exactly, but that may be the answer to your post.

As a whole U.S. citizens see Canadians as friendly allies. But as of late I could easily see political extremists hating anything out of their narrow vision of acceptance.

You should have a 2 minute conversation with my Father in law then. He honestly, hates Canadians, Bipolar people, or basically anybody just a little different than himself even though he married into a bipolar family and I'm Schizophrenic/Bipolar mixed. But, he's not the only example I've come across. Maybe its just the internet and hateful people across the internet idk. That being said, my post was entirely a rant, it wasn't meant to be an attack on Americans. I love being American, but I also love my Canadian side as well and I feel like I should be able to express it. Just because I'm not able to freely express my Canadian side without getting attacked doesn't mean that I don't enjoy it. But still many of my closest friends are either American, British, From Brazil, or Quebecois. I grew to stop thinking negatively of French Canadians when I was around 18 or so and one of my best friends (Who lived in Montreal at the time but he was from a small Quebec town forget where) introduced me to Christ (I didn't convert until many years later but I still liked his stories and what he had to say) and we became really fast friends. I had thought at the time all people from Montreal were full of hate but, he wasn't.

Yeah I had a uncle like that I had two deal with. Instead of talking about Canadians it was bragging about his own accomplishment's, which would be OK by itself but he also looked down on other people too. It was a kind of reverse reaction he picked up, from being refugee in the 1950s where are the Greasers made fun of you not speaking English well, having an accent, and just obviously being a foreigner.

But I had a lot of problems with him, because often my life didn't seem to be going anywhere with my own problems/ life issues. So it was kind of like having a personal tormentor invited to all our major family gatherings and holiday celebrations.

I was born and raised in Massena NY, just across the St Lawrence river from Cornwall Canada. Massena and Cornwall were referred to the "twin cities." I do no recall any such discrimination against Canadians? Massena had a large aluminum company plant as well as a Chevy plant and many people drove across the river to work. Again.. I do not recall any such discrimination.
We have family memeber, including grandparents and cousins who came from Canada.
Sorry. I am not doubting you or your observations. I just wonder if you are mistaking this for something else. We have a great respect for our northern neighbor. Our nations may have differences... kind of like brothers in a family. But you have to agree, if someone messes with one of us, they mess with both of us.
Sorry is someone treated you badly. Shame on them! I count Canadians as friends and allies!
