Third bridegroom service last night...and back spasms and exhaustion (my illness related) hit me about halfway through. Yay! I love Holy Week :p

I only was able to attend one of the bridegroom services, the one tonight. Were the other two much different? Perhaps you can give me a brief recap...?

Yeah, the texts are different. They're all pretty great, but the theme for each night changes. The outline of the service, of course, is the same. It's matins with a three-ode canon and a gospel reading.

They have different topics. If you want to read the text, go to ematins.org and go the holy week services :) his translation is really great.

thanks for this. Too bad i missed the other two, i really enjoyed the one last night.

Can someone tell me about how long the royal hours and the typica last on Friday?

An hour? Ish?

They're worth going to at least once, but are mostly 'reader' services (i.e. a lot of solitary chanting). I go when I can, but of all the Holy Week services that's the first one to go if I HAVE to miss one.

Now... the OTHER two Friday services are must-go services. The Vespers on Friday mid-day, and ESPECIALLY the Friday evening (called "Holy Saturday Matins") is a must must must. The lamentations before the tomb of Christ contain some of the most beautiful theology... the symbolism of the procession under the tomb... Absolutely fantastic.

Agreed. I rarely go to the Royal Hours, but I never miss the Unailing/Apokathelosis, or the Lamentations.
