  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

OK! I'm DONE with the "first day of school" paperwork that they pile on parents. I feel like I'm doing more homework on this one day than I'll see my son do during the entire school year.

We're in for a busy year, with scouts and band (in 8th grade, they play at the football games) and drama club and debate team.

I'm getting tired just thinking about it.

And of course you left it to the last night!!! :p

Personally, I don't get all the extracurricular activities kids 'have' to participate in after school. But that's just me. It is pretty much unheard of over in Finland and if you do participate in something it's in a separate club, not school related. It's a bit of an evil circle - lots of EC activities, less time to study, lower scores on tests, lack of parental involvment in some cases but when are the parents supposed to 'involve' themselves when the kid is gone all the time, and then lower scores is less chance of college, but then lots of EC activities can boost that chance... ARGH! And it starts younger and younger...

I'm not targeting this to anyone, because in most cases it's not the parent's fault at all (in some it is) but the pressure of getting into college. Then the US is scratching their heads why scores are falling on the general knowledge plane in the country. Adding three more EC activities... I don't think that's the solution.

*end rant*:)

Good morning, everyone! Pass me the donuts, especially if you have a cream filled. Mmmmm.

Khaleas, one of our neighbors is a college professor, and he says ridiculous overscheduling continues into college, and then the kids get totally burned out before they're 20.

Andy goes to an arts school, and there are tons of activities available as extras after school. At the signup night, some parents were signing their kid up for something everyday, meaning that they would have no time to just play (or, heaven forbid, do homework).

No, no, no. I did not save them for the last night. I completed them on the FIRST night of school, when the piles of papers came home!

Yes, this year "band class" becomes extra-curricular, so my kid is rattling off dates ("then... on March 2, 2007....we go to....).

I'm worrying about March 2? God willing, we'll live that long, but I'm not worried about March 2. I'm not even worried about October!

So he's sitting there with his school planner, which I told him he should use to write down the important upcoming dates, and catch any conflicts with scouting and drama and debate and band before they happen.

Kids need day planners now? Not that mine uses his. (I live by mine at work!). How much more complicated can we make a 14 year-old's life?

I know some of you may not remember, or did not see, my earlier post about our attempts at putting in a new Koi pond in our backyard. Well, the complication of a phone cable at the bottom before we could get the last six inches dug out is still not resolved. It took weeks just to convince the phone company it was theirs, until hubby took a picture of the cable in our Koi pond hole downtown to their office to show them. Then they claimed it was going to cost us for them to take it out, until we convinced them to come out and see for themselves that it was not in an easement. We insisted we were not going to pay for its removal.

Okay, so the phone company finally consents to removing the offending cable. They started work on this a few weeks later. Keep in mind we started this project in June. It is now September, and they are still working on rerouting their entire system behind our property, and it has turned into a huge project.

I am believing they are almost done with doing this, and will soon remove the cable. If we can get the first step of the Koi pond finished before winter, that will be nice. Otherwise, this has mostly delayed us from finishing this pond this year, although that would have unlikely anyway (we do not know what we are doing). We were planning on doing this in stages, anyway. So we may get only one "stage" completed instead of three. :o

I had to use dayplanners from about fourth grade up. I just couldn't manage without one, trying to remember everywhere I was supposed to go and everything I had to do.

I'm so glad my school district had band/chorus/orchestra as electives instead of extracurriculars--if I'd had to manage eight classes on top of orchestra, it would have been a nightmare.

I've been trying to teach my dear husband to use a calendar for the past two years to no avail. He doesn't even remember (or care to write down) what day he has duty. So after a few days of whining and complaining he looks again so I can make a note of it. We have a dry eraseboard calendar in the kitchen that I keep updated on stuff.
I keep my own on Outlook (Franklin Covey software) and I keep a paper calendar with me as well (although now when I'm not doing much I keep forgetting to take it along grrrr). I took the basic Franklin Covey seminar some years ago and for the student price it wasn't that bad. I've ADD and just a horrible procastinator with good but short memory. Learning the technique to write things in my calendar makes my life so much less stressful. My brain doesn't have to try to keep up with things. I just put appointments with reminders on my cellphone calendar.
I thought college was a breeze since most profs have all their assignments for the semester in the syllabi. I always made double copies of it, one to keep with me and one to keep at home and if something else came up (which at my school it rarely did) I wrote it on the one I took along. I went to a major commuter school so there wasn't much after school stuff for me. Funny thing is that since I went back to school at 25 no one really expected me to do anything.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks kids in the US are overscheduled. Up til 7th grade I was out playing outside with sticks and mud and stuff after school. Build stuff and ride my bike. I just get exhausted listening to my friend whose 6 year old plays soccer and lacrosse in the spring (along with art class and 'ballet'), then in the fall it's field hockey, art class, 'ballet' and violin (which is bloody murder to listen to :sorry: ). On top of that she went to a giften kids kindergarten last year and actually had like 1-2 hrs of homework!!! A 6 year old!!! I don't think I had 2 hrs of homework until maybe high school... Then again, I rarely did more than required in high school...

College kids are stupid LOL. Today I had Anthropology 101 and so we sat there for 15 minutes waiting for the professor. So some kid says "Fifteen minutes, the professor didn't show up so we can leave" So half the class left, and the other half stayed to be greeted 5 minutes later by the professor apologizing for his tardiness :)

Though, frankly, I rarely wait more than 10 minutes for a tardy prof, except maybe on teh first day of class, then it's 20 minutes. I have other things I could be doing. The prof will understand.
