Matthew 3:
4
Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist;
and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan
went out to him
6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

The preaching of a mysterious holy man led to a spiritual revival in the land of Judea,
as evidenced by the widespread move of repentance and the confession of sins.
The coming of the Messiah brought a different result.

John 6:15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him
by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

The ministry of Jesus Christ did not bring spiritual revival because the people were not
seeking a spiritual leader! The desire of their hearts was to see Rome driven off the land
and the kingdom of Israel restored. As a result, the Lord often had to retreat away from
the people who needed to hear His words.

John 2:
23
Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed
in His name when they saw the signs which He did.
24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men,
25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

The Lord knew that until the Holy Spirit could be sent, the people lacked the power of regeneration and renewal within them to rightly receive the truth. The error of their
agenda was such that the people soon turned against Him.

John 10:
37
If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may
know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.
39 Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.
40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was
baptizing at first, and there He stayed.
41 Then many came to Him and said, John performed no sign, but all the
things that John spoke about this Man were true
.
42 And many believed in Him there.

Notice that the people who truly experienced the spiritual revival brought about
by the repentance and remission of sin during John’s preaching were able to recognize
the Messiah, because what they had heard from John was clearly manifest in Christ.
The spiritual revival in the time of Christ remained therefore, in the wilderness.

Because John had prepared the way. :)
