Day care operator hit with 33 new charges

— Police say a total of six victims have been identified in the case against an Adrian day care operator accused of child abuse.

From staff reports

ADRIAN — Authorities have filed 33 more charges against an Adrian day care operator accused of sexually abusing children in his care, bringing the total number of charges against Douglas Jay Clark to 77 and the total number of alleged victims in the case to six.

According to Detective Vince Emrick, Clark was arraigned Friday on the following charges:

— 21 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

— Five counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct......

— Three counts of child sexually abusive activity.

— One count of using a computer to commit a felony.

— One count of extortion.

— One felony firearm count.



— One count of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

A Happy Independence Day?

Today is Zimbabwe’s independence day, marking 26 years of misrule, decline, and oppression. This address from Arthur Mutambara, an opposition leader associated with the Movement for Democratic Change, sums up my feelings beautifully.

Twenty six years after independence, the people of Zimbabwe are not enjoying the fruits of liberation. Instead, starvation, unemployment, deplorable working conditions, unmitigated suffering, and unprecedented hopelessness have become endemic.

[/FONT] The home office is seeking to deport the Zimbabwean teenager who exposed a major sex-for-asylum scandal in the Immigration Service, The Observer has learnt.

The move comes as the government prepares to deport hundreds of Zimbabweans in anticipation of winning a crucial test case next month that would allow it to resume deportations. The government is also sending letters to hundreds of Zimbabwean asylum-seekers telling them they should consider returning home - despite the near collapse of the country's economic and political stability and increasing state-sponsored violence...........

'US ready to strike Iran on Good Friday'

The United States will be ready to launch a missile attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as soon as early this month, perhaps "from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. on April 6," according to reports in the Russian media on Saturday.
According to Russian intelligence sources, the reports said, the US has devised a plan to attack several targets in Iran, and an assault could be carried out by launching missiles from fighter jets and warships stationed in the Persian Gulf.

Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslims

Schools are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, a Governmentbacked study has revealed.
It found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial.

Pig-footed Bandicoot Rises From the Dead

A kitten-sized Australian marsupial thought to have gone extinct over a century ago appears to be alive and well. The pig-footed bandicoot was last spotted in 1901, but today researchers provided fresh evidence of its existence. "It's a miracle," says Jared Watson, a conservation biologist at the University of Brunswick in Melbourne. "I thought we'd seen the last of this 8-teated, posteriorly pouched creature."

Chaeropus ecaudatus. The size of a kitten, it had long, slender limbs, the hind feet bearing a single, elongated toe like a tiny horses� hoof, while the forefeet bore two digits resembling miniature cloven hoofs. Pig-footed bandicoots were never common, although the species was rather widespread. They appear to have been principally vegetarian, taking grass seeds in the wild, although in captivity they ate lettuce, bulbs and grasshoppers, and according to one observer they drank a good deal of water. By day they sheltered in a grass nest, from which they emerged in the evening to feed. Twins may have been normal, with breed occurring between May and June. WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Reuters) -- A New Zealand environmental body is targeting the Easter bunny in a renewed war against one of the country's worst natural pests.
Environment Canterbury on the country's South Island wants people to come up with an alternative Easter symbol as part of a campaign to highlight the damage caused by the non-native pest.
"They're like an environmental curse," Mark Oldfield of Environment Canterbury said.

After they get infected with the brain parasite Toxoplasma gondii, however, rats become attracted to cat pee, increasing the chance they'll become cat food.
This much researchers knew. But a new study shows the parasite, which also infects more half the world's human population, seems to target a rat's fear of cat urine with almost surgical precision, leaving other kinds of fear alone.
This discovery could shed light "on how fear is generated in the first place"

Doggie yoga: Real downward facing dogs

BELLEVUE, Wash. — By the end of a recent yoga class, many participants were passed out on their mats, in a position their instructor calls the "upward facing belly pose."
That's largely because about half the group was about to walk out on four legs: The Seattle/King County Humane Society now offers 40 minute classes of "doggie yoga."
Brenda Bryan, who teaches human yoga as well as the new class for both dogs and humans, says the dogs react to the gentle energy in the room.

The controversial treatment is offered by a church in Ethiopia which claims to have cured hundreds of believers.

The Conservative Party Human Rights Commission held a hearing in Parliament yesterday (March 29) on the plight of the Dalits or “untouchables” in India, in the week that Britain marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Four leading Indian campaigners presented detailed evidence of serious human rights abuses as a result of the caste system.
The Commission heard extensive accounts of bonded labour, discrimination, rape, sexual slavery, beatings and killings of India’s 250 million Dalits and “backward castes”.

In the Hindu caste system, the two opposing ends – Brahmin and Dalit – have become rigid with ascending order of reverence and descending degree of contempt. It gives pride and superiority complex to upper castes and inferiority complex to untouchables. Dalits, who number over 250 million, share the common stigma of untouchability and are considered a polluting people -- unseeable, unapproachable and untouchable. They are forced to live in segregated dwellings, assigned most degrading and polluting occupations and are denied access to education, public utility services and temples.

Talking CCTV Barks Orders

CCTV cameras fitted with loudspeakers that shout orders at anti-social yobs and criminals are to be installed across the country.
The "talking" spy cameras are being set up in 20 areas across the country after a successful pilot scheme in Middlesbrough.
The test project saw vandals told to stop what they were doing and litterbugs ordered to take their rubbish with them or find a bin.
Council workers in a control centre monitored pictures from 12 talking cameras in the town and communicated directly with people on the street at the flick of a switch.
The scheme has been criticised by opponents as "Big Brother gone mad".

The pair will be among several VIPs visiting the luxury Perthshire resort to outline how the influential group's pledges have fared since being announced in July 2005.
The eight leaders of the world's top industrialised nations, including Tony Blair and President Bush, took over the hotel for three days to talk about world poverty, trade, climate change and the Aids epidemic.

It's the magnificent Piton de la Fournaise (Furnace Peak) on La Reunion island.

The volcano is about 2,600 metres high.

New Rules For Pet Owners

If you dog or cat is overweight, it's time to put them on diet - otherwise you could face prosecution under the new Animal Welfare Act.
The Act means owners will have to provide their pets with a suitable diet, environment and housing and ensure they don't suffer pain or disease.
It's the biggest overhaul of animal welfare legislation for a century.
Maximum penalties include a ban on owning animals, fines of up to £20,000 or up to 51 weeks in jail....

I understand that Cannibal Corpse is a bit hardcore for most, a lot of metal bands are but in my experience the thing about being in the metal scene is that you are exposed to a huge range of tastes that most people never hear of. Take a look at Apocalyptica or Pain of Salvation, or Ed Alleyne-Johnson. This is some of the most beautiful music that I've heard which I would never have found if not through metal and the variety it encourages.

I went and saw Phantom of the Opera and this music from Pain of Salvation has the same intensity....
