My youngest: "Went to HPE for the first time since winter."

You know, one of those little joys. I went to a hairdresser for the first time in three months.

Me: "Great." HPE, HPE...? Is it a café, a restaurant, a clothing store, some sort of adventure park or something? I do know that MCD means hamburgers. "So was it good?"

Youngest, looks at me: "Mom, you have no idea what HPE stands for, do you?"

Me, rather sheepishly: "Not really."

Youngest: "Herran Pyhä Ehtoollinen." = Holy Communion, "HC".

Me: "Oh. Oooooh."

---

I'm this old and I have never ever heard the acronym. What Twitter does to our beautiful language!

Well, I have never heard of the term "Herran Pyhä Ehtoollinen" until now.

Noooo... Imagine that! And already pastori Martti Luther himself referred to the Herrane Pyhe Echtolinen back in 1528!

None of the Lutherans that I know have ever used it in things where I've been involved - directly or indirectly. We've used Holy Communion, Eucharist, the Lord's Supper, Remembrance Feast, and some others, but always English terms . . .

Hey, at least I do know Simul Iustice y Peccator!

The neatest thing is, come to think of it, that Luther's Herrane Pyhe Echtolinen actually predates Holy Communion, the Lord's Supper and whatever else you have in English! :)

We usually call it just ehtoollinen, which would literally mean the evening meal, i.e. supper.
