It is possible to draw closer to God with our mouth: It is also possible to pay lip service to God and His words and be far away from Him in our hearts. Human hearts are capable of this level of deception. Human hearts can be easily involved in self-deceit. This is the reason why wicked people may think they are good.
Our hearts cannot be relied upon in order for us to know our spiritual state. God's word, through the help of the Holy Spirit, will clearly inform us of our spiritual conditions. Unregenerated hearts are desperately wicked and deceptive. Such hearts are also slippery, always finding a way to escape the truth and venerate lies.
