in 10-15 minutes try visiting wikipedia/google, or various others here http://sopastrike.com/. I'm not sure what timezone they're going with, if it's eastern they'll be striking soon!

My home page going dark? >:-(

"Think of it as a virtual strike. The Internet industry says the bills would “end the Web as we know it” —restricting how websites operate and what people share via social media. So some sites have banded together to show what would happen to the Web if the bills become law: big holes where household names like Wikipedia used to be.

What is SOPA? - Mike Zapler and Kim Hart - POLITICO.com

I have no opinion except wish the govt to keep it's mitts off the internet.

...sigh, no home page... for how long I wonder...

Which site are you worried about? Google is still available; it just has a black stamp on the doodle.

Lot of sites are protest the way they do it differs, wikipedia should have all pages but a few block for english readers, try wikipedia.com. Most sites will probably just mention sopa and pipa and allow you to use them. And yes is for 24 hours.

Homepage ok. Tis google as I use it so much. Has a blacked rectangle. Wiki has an explanation.

I wish govt. to not be involved at all in net. Forlorn wish I suspect.

There are so many things the U.S. government can do without having to implement something like SOPA. However, there would be a rift with those who currently are in opposition of it; don't want to upset any of you guys who feel or think it's okay to download EVERYTHING off the internet for free.

i'll be honest man, I like your personality and I like what you bring to the forum. All your posts are interesting. And you do bring up a valid point, but personally I don't think most are in favor of piracy though, but these bills are definitely not the way...take sopa for instance it turns copyright infringment into a criminal manner, no longer a civil, and that means it = felony. Both these bills remove all due process, meaning someone can simply accuse you and you're site will have the dns blocked by isp etc... that removes your ability to defend yourself in court, is witch trial basically. Also keep in mind it's not the gov who just has this power under sopa and PIPA but big media can wield it too, freely....so the threat becomes very real because their compeitiors could be shut down left and right. Sites like wikipedia and youtube in theory would be able to exist in such a environment. They can't possibly police their millions of users. Scientific data could be squelched and prevented from being shared. Small businesses all over the internet may have to shutdown. The site owners could be faced with criminal charges even if its their users who generated the "copyright" infringing content etc...also keep in mind copyright infringement is a very complicated issue and is definitely not clear cut. There's also serious and very real concerns about it makes the net much less secure and unstable.

I didn't :) but SOPA and PIPA are very real and on the verge of being law, other things are possible i'm sure, but aren't as large scale and imposing. :)

I know what both entail, so I don't understand the rundown.

Just that those currently in opposition would see a rift if the U.S. were to find another way to fight piracy. You still have people really believing piracy =/= stealing.

Oh I did the run down more so to think about the stuff I was aware of in it(though they made claims they may remove dns blocking but they keep saying lot of stuff) and so any who weren't aware could read how serious these two bills are. Also I think it's stealing if the gov imposes such non-sense bills. It's taking peoples own money(taxes) and using it to punish them, and rewarding big media and similar, who only have the money they do because of people...I think congress being able to get money from anyone but the people should be illegal, they already make 100k+ a year salary which is more than ~90% of americans last time a checked and they getting big fat checks from companies to vote one way or another, how does that make any sense? is absolutely crazy.

Absolutely ridiculous. Their no better than the Government, they don't own the internet and the sites going black are acting like they do.

You can view wikipedia fine with mobile and if you wish to use your browser simply disable javascript. If this protest upsets you, image if it were permanent? Don't blame these companies for taking a stand these are extremely serious bills that could change the internet as we know, and in a HORRIBLE way, so many wouldn't be fighting it if it weren't true. Call your congressman and let them know you don't want them making this a reality. It's the only way we as people can take a stand against this. Otherwise the US will end up like China, with their horrible speeds and horrible firewall filtering non-sense.
