The problem here is that when closely examined the experts can tell you that it wasn't painted. The image appears on the surface of the fabric--not like paint which seeps into the strands.
OTOH, one guy showed that with a camera obscura apparatus and a cloth steeped in silver sulfate he can achieve very similar results.
The downside to that explanation is that it doesn't explain how one can see the thumb behind the hand.
