Biography of Michael Faraday

"Without experiment, I am nothing. In early life I was a very lively, imaginative person, who could believe in the Arabian Nights as easily as in the Encyclopedia, but facts became more important to me, and saved me. I could trust a fact. One thing is fortunate, which is, that whatever our opinions, they do not alter nor derange the facts of nature."

When asked about his speculations on life beyond death, Faraday replied,

"Speculations? I have none. I am resting on certainties. I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

That's interesting to me. I'm schizophrenic and find peace in facts. It helps me to remain not paranoid. Although my brain doesn't always function properly, I'm definitely better off sticking to the facts.

I think it's quite impressive that Faraday was able to accomplish as much as he did without a lot of formal training, and without much in the way of mathematical models to work with. Direct experimentation and natural human curiosity are a powerful combination.
