For those who might feel that the deceased's life was filled with mistakes and sin, it might be good to remember St. Dismas, the good thief.
Even if a sinner repents in the final moments of his life (and I feel sure he had access to the sacraments and spiritual counseling) God is there to forgive.
(This is not to say that I agree with the assessment that Kennedy led a morally bankrupt life--I don't. He has accomplishments and regrets. In other words, he was human.)
