A good percentage of our salaries goes toward SS and it isn't voluntary. I think it has saved many when they retire as people are not good at saving for the future. It is like a 401K but is not voluntary. I appreciate it. It is not paid by the tax payers like Welfare.

Yes, same as here in Oz...we call that Superannuation and it's not normally available to us until we retire.

We have a job support scheme that is funded from taxes, it provides a basic income whilst we look for a job...there's a wait period before we can access that.

Then there are aged pensions, returned service men and service women pensions, and disability support pensions, and you can draw on one of these if you meet the necessary low asset and income, and other criteria. These are also funded from taxes.

These provision of course are in many societies, and in my opinion are necessary safety nets forged from compassion and astute planning, to cover for the knowns and future unknowns.... I'm glad that they are there for members of our community, for if and when they are needed.

Little differences here as in they allow for early retirement, pulling your money out at 55 but you are penalized somewhat and it is not a welfare program which is funded somewhat by tax payers. SS and Sd and the like are taken from salaries as you work and it builds. The more you put in the more you get out. It is a percentage of your salary. There are a lot of other 'if's' but I appreciate it. I would be in the poor house without it. I am not a good saver. Over the years people have tried to destroy it wanting to have their own money to invest but again. most do not know how to save and invest so for the good of all.......

Is the government doing what we tell them? Do you really think they are? Most politicians are just in it for the power and money. They like to make laws they have no intention of following themselves.
Having the government give money to the people is opening the door wide open to socialism, which is exactly what is happening to America.
But we can leave this here if you want.

I get your point, but it seems to me it may be a little extreme, perhaps a little too black and whitish, particularly in how it relates to the OP and the dilemma confronting him.

I don't think helping him and others in a similar situation to get by, when jobs are scarce or have been put on hold, can be feared as rampant socialism or heading that way either. I can't ever see the US being a socialist state, at least in my time, unless Russia or China takes you over unexpectedly.

We also have to be careful that our opinions don't demean anyone that finds themselves in a similar state as the OP, and shame them into not applying for or accepting assistance that has thoughtfully been made available for such purposes.

There needs to be a balance between socialism and liberalism, I think that would be what God would expect of us.

Thank you for your willingness to share your opinion, it's much appreciated

This forum doesn't seem to be too active. But I thought I'd give it a shot.
Anyways, I'm looking for a Christian friend to talk to about the bible..

Hi Nick ... what would you like to talk about?
