Dear Friends,

I just spent about four hours looking for a nativity set. Didn't bring ours and miss having one under the tree. I can't begin to tell you how frustrating this was. Not in the bargain stores, Target , Michael's, Walmart, Fry's, and even the Good Will stores including the Salvation Army although they said they ran out. Finally found a fairly nice one at Walgreens. I have a beauty at home which is all hand carved. My daughter brought it for us from Mexico one year, but is actually quite fragile so didn't want to bring it. During our search I did notice plenty of other Christmas stuff but Jesus is certainly being left out of Christmas this year in many places. Now they have sets of Mr. and Mrs. Claus where Mary and Joseph used to be and the reindeer where Jesus and the shepherds were. Walgreen's had their nativity sets front and center. I think they realize leaving Jesus out is bad for business.

Merry Christmas from birdfriend...

I had a desire for one as I have a nice big conservatory on the front of the house (I know - it wasn't me! The previous owners did it!).
I searched and searched - shops, internet, everywhere - no luck.
Then last year our last independent department store was closing down and had a big sale and there I found one - the very last one - at a fraction of the original cost! The figures are lovely and it's quite a decent size.
So I set it up in front of the patio doors with a spotlight on it and some transparencies I've printed myself, on the windows saying "Unto us a child is born" etc. There it can be seen by all the passing folk but especially the children.
Well, at least I'm trying....!

I have a Walgreen's little ceramic nativity set that I bought about twelve years ago and it was only $2.99. But it's got the really important characters in it, like Jesus, Mary, Joseph, Wisemen, etc...:):)

Peace and love and Merry Christmas to all!

I was just popping in for a few minutes to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and saw your post.
Hobby Lobby, the christian based chain store where I am working has many nativity sets available at Christmas, although we are all sold out now. They are the beautiful ceramic ones with many sizes available. We have been running half off sales for weeks and sold the last one today. They have been a popular item for us. You cannot order from their website, but can order from one of their other divisions, crafts etc.com. However, they do not offer the sale prices. I know that many of you are nowhere near one of the stores, but they are opening up new stores in many other places.

Merry Christmas friends!

Thanks, Prom. I did get one that day, but is good to know that your store has them. I will be shopping in a Hobby store soon for woodburning supplies after Christmas and will try to find one of your chain here.

Merry Christmas to you! birdie

I sent emails to all of the stores that disallowed the Salvation Army in front of their stores this season. I will not shop in their stores for one full year. Hit them in the pocketbook, I say. I would like to start making nativity sets out of wood someday. My husband has all sorts of woodmaking tools, and I could paint them. That would be a lot of fun. He says we have to wait for his retirement to do that. He just doesn't have the time right now. We were in Germany a few years ago, and they have stores that are 100% Christmas items in them, and wood decorations, etc., and they are open year around. I foresee more of this type of store going in while the big stores drop all Christmas items. There will be a shopping gap that is going to be phenomenal. They will lose that, and never regain the loss again. ;) Not that I care. You mention PC to me and I start to shake.... lol

mommavelvet: That sounds like something enjoyable and productive to do especially when you retire and can spend a lot of time doing it. My husband and I both enjoy any kind of woodworking. He makes furniture and I have enjoyed various crafts. When we were young and the children were little one Christmas he cut ornaments out of wood which we all, except for the baby, painted. And we hung them on the tree. birdie.

Glad you liked it!
And. mommavelvet, I so agree with you. Wouldn't it be great to see naitivity scenes that you've made popping up all over the place!

I have the same feeling when folk buy my flags and I send them off with a prayer that they will carry the word of God on their 'wings'!
