Discussion Scripture that supports 'Spiritual Warfare'

I would like to start a discussion about Spiritual Warfare and Deliverance type of ministries and the justification for such types of ministries in scripture, because I do not see much scriptural support for this and it seems to have become a major tenant of the church. The type of Spiritual Warfare I am most referring to is the type that is written about extensively by Peter Wagner.

Please add your views and scriptural support.

There are many different kinds of anointings. Jesus dealt with the enemy a lot. Discernment of spirits is probably the number one gifting against the enemy. Your protection is in the Word of God. Your armor and weapons are for all believers, no matter what your place in the Body.

We can see evidence of darkness in the world and we don't have far to look in our own lives.

It does seem that God has "specialists" in certain areas.
Deliverance is no doubt one of those areas. People who receive words of knowledge and move in discernment of spirits can take a lot of the guesswork out of it. The name of Jesus is given to the Body, but as illustrated by the Lord's dealings with an unclean spirit, He had to know the name or the number. To do that you'd need to have that anointing working (discernment of spirits).

Deliverance, at least as I know it, is often a "layered" thing. People go through their lives like a land with many cities. These cities often have strongholds in them. People get entangled with various kinds of darkness. Masons speak all sorts of junk (curses) over themselves with their oaths and pronouncements. They acknowledge in various levels certain spirits and they invoke what sounds good, but really it is a curse. Often Masons seeking deliverance have to renounce many of these curses, names, pronoucements before deliverance can be effected.

Certain strongholds that have existed in our own lives for many years can go by basically unnoticed. One day God starts to deal with you about a certain area of your life and that stronghold is there to oppose you. It was there all along!

It takes a separated life to obtain much deliverance. We've given over to the enemy some of our freedom through our actions, words, etc. Although for some, a visit your prayer closet and some Spirit led prayer and "reversals" declared from your mouth helps to set things right.

But strongholds are just that. It's built into your life through a system of beliefs, typically involving fear. It can become quite entrenched into your life. Sometimes you can seemingly live quite well walking with the Lord with them, because He's not dealing with that area of your life. But when its time to deal with that, your "cage" gets rattled . Sometimes its being around powerful ministries. Your strongholds act up.

Usually the Lord strengthens and establishes you before approaching some strongholds. You don't just go full out against the enemy. You've got to be willing to walk in the light. To displace some spirits because of a walk in darkness (even in an area of your life), means that you'll have to renounce involvement in it and then have that spirit bound up and sent packing. Sometimes just the presence of the anointing, or even by prayer of someone somewhere in the world. But you have to change the legality that allowed that spirit to oppress you. Then to keep your freedom, you have to have repented and walk in repentance in that area. Otherwise you pick up more than you just got free from. It's right there in the Word. You'll never hear it in most denominations because they don't have the anointing.

The type and shadow is in Joshua where the children of Israel to to take their inheritance. It was their land and they had to follow God's instructions for each battle. Most importantly they had to obey His voice. For Jericho it was one way and for Ai, it was another. If memory serves, there were 21 kings they had to deal with in the land God gave His children. In some cases they didn't obey what He said by removing all of the enemies in that land. In one case they made a pact!

One big thing was not fellowship with people who serve other Gods. You'll take on their ways. You really have to choose your friends. We're not called to be best friends with ungodly people. We also should be walking with a constellation of people in your life that will lift you into higher places in the spirit. It's a compromise to hang out with people you know abide in the "natural". If you're being dealt with this, then as you move with God, He can give you grace and do some things in the spirit to enable these friendships to dissipate (by grace!).

Not long after I was baptized in the Spirit, the warfare was on! I never knew it my entire life, although the effects of it plagued me for decades. As I began to become aware of what God's Word said about this subject (I was completely ignorant!), I began to understand. I remember the very first Spirit filled meeting I attended and the speaker bound up spirits that had to go, it wasn't 2 seconds and I felt something leap off of my shoulder! I was shocked!

I could tell MANY stories. I have won (and lost) many battles.
The denomination I grew up in never said one word about the warfare. It's vital to educate yourself (let God educate you) about it. I heartily encourage getting some good books on the subject. Derek Prince has a lot of good experience on the subject.

The enemy would no dout raise up all sorts of commentary to criticize your seeking info about this topic (as they HATE to have their free reign interrupted in your life). Don't pay any attention.

I tell you truly, even your most trusted and loved people in the spirit can pick up an oppression, or as God begins to deal with them about strongholds in their life, they begin to exhibit the wrong kind of wisdom. I've seen it in many people. You have to be a little wary and careful, yet understanding because unless you lived the holy life before you came to the Lord (not!), one day it will be you approaching God to have some layers of darkness taken off of you. Remember Peter spoke after the enemy "Let it not be so!" and the Lord rebuked the enemy. If you've ever seen that last movie the Avengers and "Loki" is in the unseen background feeding a response to something someone said and that one next to him repeated it as his own words. Sometimes it's that subtle. Kind of scary the deeper you go. You'll see it working in church people who typically bear good fruit. They just getting dealt with and we must work with them to help them get free.

It's a battle that will never end while we're here on the earth. I've taken some very hard knocks myself and it's a deliberate walk to maintain your freedom, once you start down that road. But you're already on it, and if you're sincere, you want to verify the validity of such ministry, and it is very much so.

One testimony is that deliverance is worth more than gold and even a few layers of it can bring great freedom and liberty you didn't know you were missing!

There's a lot of quackery too to be sure, but I've learned to just test some things out and the more extreme sounding things just put on the shelf in prayer. The Holy Spirit is an EXCELLENT Teacher.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

Instead of complaining about the sins of others confess them as your own. Go on, give it a try, see what happens. The principle carries over.

    Philippians 4

4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

I saw Transformations where whole cities were transformed, in one city 90 percent is saved now, they first prayed and they had an idol there and when he was gone the city got saved. In another city they prayed and there was a witch and one day they prayed let her get saved or leave town, she left and revival broke out. He said the problem is not with the people in the city, but what is the devil doing to the people.
When we pray for people we know, to get saved we first bind the powers that blind their thoughts so they can make a decision for Christ when they hear the gospel.
Here's the prayer and the Scripture that support it:

Chartace, since you are believer, know that "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." I John 4:4

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, ..." Eph 6:10-19

You can also ask Yahweh for His peace (Gal 5:22).

An excellent book is "Scripture Keys for Kingdom Living" by June Newman Davis. She talks about praying the Word of God as a sword and shielf (really all of your armor). You get built up reading it and it edifies you to stand in truth. You start getting these scriptures established in you and you really sense growth!

One thing about various aspects of warfare and victory, there's more than just taking up the Word as a protector or weapon. It's about doing the Word. Taking it up is a vital part, but there's a lot of wisdom scriptures that have to be observed. We can leave openings in our lives that oppose our efforts to be free.

I was with a girlfriend a long time ago and we were doing a lot of warfare and experiencing some problems, when we knew so much victory and freedom. I had a dream where we were standing at the door throwing flaming arrows back outside that the enemy kept firing at us. The problem was, was that they were coming in through doors and windows that were open. We spent so much effort to contain the attacks, but it was our fault through aspects of our walk together that "gave place" to the enemy.

There's an mp3 on the net somewhere called "Ridding your Home of Spiritual Darkness". You can probably search for it. He talks about doing a house cleaning.

I had been dealt with once about what was coming on television. It's a door that can let all sorts of things in the house. I had been warned about not watching horror movies. Anyway, I fell asleep with the TV on and I felt a check in my spirit that something was wrong. I woke up and saw a vampire movie on TV! It's vital to know what is watched or heard through the gates of the media in your home.

Remember also, the curious arts that that community burned, and the Word prevailed in that community afterward.

I would do a good search for a teaching on the subject and then get that Scripture Keys book and try it out. Watch the fruits. That's what we judge by. It's almost Halloween and all sorts of weird zombie movies, etc. comes on. It's better to leave it alone and not oppose yourself. Forget the quackery that's out there and just go with how you're led, one foot right in front of the other. You'll have a testimony that will enforce victory in your life as your spirit is energized by sharing and someone else will catch your fire.

You can expect opposing voices as you venture forth into doing things that make for life as an overcomer.

Just a reminder - "When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation." Matt 12:43-45 Means to keep our deliverance, we need to be more often in The Word or thinking about Yahweh and His Word. (Psa 119:15).

I'm glad you're interested in the Word, which if applied properly, provides definitive instruction in righteousness.

Some of the foundation scriptures of spiritual warfare include who your enemy is and what God says about what Jesus did (and who He is) to defeat him. I'll
give you some scriptures here and there so I won't swamp you and the thread all at once. -- AA

“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.”
    Gen 3:1-3

“And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.”
    Gen 3:13

“And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
    Gen 3:14-15

“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through Thy name. And He said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from Heaven.”
    Luke 10:17-18

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
    John 8:44

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
    1 John 3:8

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him.”
    Acts 10:38

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
    John 10:10

“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
    Heb 2:14-15

“For He must reign, till He hath put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. For He hath put all things under His feet.”
    1 Cor 15:24-27

“Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord. And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
    Job 2:1-2

“And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
    Matt 4:3-4

“And the devil, taking Him up into an high mountain, shewed unto Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto Him, All this power will I give Thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If Thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be Thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind Me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.”
    Luke 4:5-8

AA - In these scriptures, it is demonstrated that there is a real devil who wars with mankind, but the promised deliverer came in Jesus. We will see that He defeated him at the cross and sits victoriously at the throne of God, with all things beneath His feet. But the victory is contested by the enemy. That victory is enforced by the church through the Blood, the Word, and the Spirit of God. The enemy contests the truth and the church is to live (deliberately) as an overcomer by the power of God. The enemy seeks to keep the chuches eyes diverted, and to behold his deception. I guess I'm simplifying it somewhat, but that is the general theme.

Each passage has a more complete meaning within the entire passage, but don't believe anything is taken out of context.

Thank you for all that scripture.

I guess what I am confused by is the term 'deliverance' as in not being possessed by a demon.

It seems to me that in the definition of 'deliverance' as used by the church, it can mean that you have something attached to you or some kind of sin that one needs to be delivered from.

HOwever, I see in the BIble that these people were possesed by demons.

I do not see the scripture that supports that someone would need deliverance from say pornography, or mental illness or overeating. Some think that any sin that is a struggle is a demon in that person or attached to them.

That is the type of thing I would like to discuss if there is a basis for this in scripture. What do you think AA?

That's a good question. I know that Jesus operated in the gift of "discernment of spirits", which involves seeing or hearing in the spirit realm, as well as a supernatural knowing by which spirit a person speaks. As a result he spoke to spirits, sometimes identifying them by name (or even number). I'd have to look closely regarding the relationship between names indicated in the scripture. It is commonly associated that the predominant characteristic of a spirit (the actual assignment) is the name that they go by (i.e., "spirit of infirmity"). This goes a lot deeper than the ones mentioned in the Bible. The Bible is kind of a roadmap which often provides precedents for many things. Since God is not limited, I do believe it has been demonstrated that you can go way "beyond" examples in the Word. I do believe that everything must AGREE with what is in the Word.

A very relevant example are present day experiences in the spirit realm, visits to Heaven, visions of angels, etc. They still happen. With each newer one that occurred in Biblical times, God was not limited to doing things the way He previously did, although there is agreement with guidelines He already established.

People have to bear witness to what happens to them, examine truthfulness in line with our limited knowledge of scripture, etc. Those who hear the testimony must bear witness to it (supernaturally) to benefit from it. "Flesh and blood" not being the one really telling your spirit. These things sometimes "dawning" on you over time even. Those things that would benefit you, you would prayerfully go forward to "do" them and then you watch for the fruits as you walk them out. So if someone has a revelation or a prophesy, or discernment of spirits, the receiver would share (of appropriate) what God is showing them and the intended recipient (if in direct ministry) would consider and weigh for validation from the Holy Spirit.

Example, if a member of the body, say in requested prayer ministry, states that they believe a "spirit of gluttony" is at work in someone's overeating problem, then the submissive recipient would likely be instructed to make sure they're repentant regarding the eating thing, then have that specific spirit sent packing. It's vital that the beneficiary be "on board" with the repentance because when one leaves, you've got to kind of "shepherd" your deliverance so they don't come back. You'd avoid the buffet tables, etc. You'd pray for grace for self control and get into agreement about receiving what you ask for.

The fruits would be a greater liberty for the recipient. Often you can sense a "lifting". Some people get sick or even cry out.

I want to say that there is a great opportunity for freakazoids to run with this and go the wrong way. I won't get into that and it happens, but I will look more closely to see about scriptural ties to names and assignments. I'm sure they are there!

Real spiritual warfare is described in the following scriptures.

The battle is in the mind.

    2 Cor 10:3-5
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; KJV

Imaginations or reasonings that contradicts what God says.

    2 Cor 10:5
    overthrowing reasonings and every high thing that lifts itself up against the knowledge of God, and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ;

We are also responsible to monitor our thought life.

We are to take captive every thought that comes into our minds that does not line up with what the word says.

    The battlefield is the mind.

Every battle we lose is experienced first in our own mind.

Every victory we have is experienced first in our own mind.
