Scientists hail stem cell breakthrough
South Korean scientists say they have made stem cells tailored to match the individual for the first time.
Each of the 11 new stem cell lines that they made were created by taking genetic material from the patient and putting it into a donated egg.

The resultant cells were a perfect match for the individual and could mean treatments for diseases like diabetes without problems of rejection.

The study, published in Science, has been hailed as a major advance.
It looks like South Korea will make huge strides forward as they pioneer this technology. The economic center is certainly moving towards Asia.

Bush&Co. have basically stifled funding here long enough for the US to fall too far behind. We are going to miss out on a wonderful new medical era - and some serious economic benefits. "You can't kill a life to save a life" bleh. He won't rail against abortion as vehemently (because he knows he'll lose) but he will go against study on 9-call blastocysts.

At least in Calif., Arnold seems to be doing something to fund it.

All that Bush&Co have done is to prohibit Federal money to be used for embryonic stem cell research. States can do it if they please (California has and Wisconsin might as well soon). And of course, private institutions are free to investigated as well. If anyone wants this type of research funded, then support a company that's doing it. I don't want my taxes doing it.

I bet when embryonic stem cell research leads to other scientific advances, like a greater understanding in how to use someone's own adult stem cells, a lot of these people crying about the research will be the first in line for treatments.

But there are already studies in using adult stem cells which have provided real results (unlike embryonic stem cell research).

Research on adult stem cells has recently generated a great deal of excitement. Scientists have found adult stem cells in many more tissues than they once thought possible. This finding has led scientists to ask whether adult stem cells could be used for transplants. In fact, adult blood forming stem cells from bone marrow have been used in transplants for 30 years. Certain kinds of adult stem cells seem to have the ability to differentiate into a number of different cell types, given the right conditions. If this differentiation of adult stem cells can be controlled in the laboratory, these cells may become the basis of therapies for many serious common diseases.
The history of research on adult stem cells began about 40 years ago. In the 1960s, researchers discovered that the bone marrow contains at least two kinds of stem cells. One population, called hematopoietic stem cells, forms all the types of blood cells in the body. A second population, called bone marrow stromal cells, was discovered a few years later. Stromal cells are a mixed cell population that generates bone, cartilage, fat, and fibrous connective tissue.

Also in the 1960s, scientists who were studying rats discovered two regions of the brain that contained dividing cells, which become nerve cells. Despite these reports, most scientists believed that new nerve cells could not be generated in the adult brain. It was not until the 1990s that scientists agreed that the adult brain does contain stem cells that are able to generate the brain's three major cell types—astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, which are non-neuronal cells, and neurons, or nerve cells.

I consider embryonic stem cell research to simply be another form of recycling. Why throw something away when you can put it to good use elsewhere? /hugs a tree

Won't the cells die anyway?? How is it killing to use stem cells that are not needed for life anymore? I don't expect that anyone is actually killing anyone so that they can use their stem cells. They are using stem cells from babies that are already dying or dead, right??
