1 Peter 5 verse 8 and 9 (KJV)
[8] Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
[9] Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
1 Peter 5 verse 8 and 9 (Amplified Bible)
8 Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour. 9 But resist him, be firm in your faith [against his attack—rooted, established, immovable], knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being experienced by your brothers and sisters throughout the world. [You do not suffer alone.]
To understand the verses above we need to know how lions operate and how their prey gets caught by a lion. Please note the following video from National Geographic shows a lion stalking and killing a prey so be advised.
In the above video we are told that a lion sight is 6 times better than humans, they can hear a prey a mile away, and has a keen smell being able to tell when a prey was in a particular area. These abilities are what helps lions to hunt for food effectively. A lion also can kill a prey twice it's size, so the size of a prey does not matter to them.
The bible warns us to be sober (not affected by alcohol; not drunk) but to be alert at all times. This is because Satan is like a lion is prowling (moving about restlessly and stealthily, especially in search of prey), looking for persons he can kill and devour. As a former arch angel Satan has capabilities that exceed our own naturally, and therefore can use this to his advantage when looking to destroy humans.
The video shows that a lion doesn't just run after any animal they see immediately. They walk carefully and precisely, using grass to hide themselves and then hang around near animals ready to pounce. So they are patiently waiting for an opportunity to strike.
Looking on the above video there are Zebras seen in a particular area, lions are close to them, but these zebras are not aware of their presence, or seem to be unconcerned (perhaps in some way they have gotten used to their presence). Then unfortunately one Zebra decides to go on its own, leaving the group of Zebras, and unfortunately he is killed by a lion, without he even being aware that the lion was running towards him quickly. He was an easy prey and he didn't even have a chance to run away because of how quickly the lion ran to him.
In the video we also learn that the lion goes for the windpipe, a specific target area to kill the prey. Therefore the lion is an expert on hunting and killing prey quickly. We also learn that lions are social animals especially when devouring a prey. Just like the lion, the devil has other lions, with him to help to subdue the prey. Lions are not alone, they travel in packs.
The lesson is to learn how dangerous Satan, the enemy is, to be always alert because he is looking continually for persons to devour although he is not visible to the naked eye. Letting down your guard for one moment, going astray, leaving the protection of the group, can mean the difference between life and death.
When a lion attacks a prey it is brutal, it hurts severely, it kills. Jesus Christ wants us to remain firm in faith (complete trust or confidence in him) despite the fierceness of lions around, knowing that as you and others suffer from potentially severe attacks frequently, with some being fatal, that other Christians around the world also face the same problem so you are not alone.
Christians who grow up in countries with lions roaming around daily, has a much much deeper understanding and appreciation of what God is saying. In some countries, lions prey not only on animals, but on humans as well.
Below is a National Geographic Documentary that highlights this severe problem that humans face.
