I agree that it is up to parents to teach their children about their faith. I wouldn't want a teacher that is not even a Christian teaching mine the doctrines of Christianity in any depth.Yes, I know what you mean.
Children need to know about Christianity.
Schools around here do celebrate Christmas and Easter.
The schools can't teach religion, but they can teach ABOUT religion, and they do.
Much of our history lessons deal with religion.
Christian children should already know the tenets of Christianity and bring this knowledge with them to school.
It helps them understand history.
But they have to be TAUGHT Christianity, and schools aren't allowed to do this.
We have to do it.
Schools cannot, as far as I know, put on Christmas pageant plays and Easter is celebrate with eggs and bunnies not crosses and Jesus unless the students do it all themselves without any school employee participation. And then other students cannot be forced to attend any such event.
The San Diego school system is sponsoring events for Muslim holidays, etc. that children are required to attend. They are not going to do the same for Christian or Jewish, etc. religions.
They say it is to help combat bullying of Muslim children. Sorry that isn't a good enough excuse. These are kids and they need to be quickly instructed on the rights of others and that they aren't king of the roost. If they do it again there will be severe consequences.
The school needs to have a consistent plan for what those consequences will be and make all the kids and parents aware of those rules. The consequences should be geared to the age of the child. It takes time for kids to grow into mature self-control.
