Saint Theodore

theodore_un2.jpg

4th century martyr. One of the most famous Roman soldier-martyrs, almost nothing is known of his life except his martyrdom.

He was called a wonder worker. As a young recruit, while his legion was wintering at Amasea near Pontus, he was ordered to worship idols. He refused.

When he was called before the governor he said: "Jesus Christ is my one God. There is no limb I would not sacrifice if God demanded it."

Theodore was subjected to a fearsome series of tortures before being thrown into a furnace.

His ashes were saved by a Christian woman called Eusebia.

A church in Rome is dedicated to him. His shrine was at Euchaita in Pontus. His relics are said to be in Venice and Chartres. His legend is told in mosaics at St Mark's in Venice and in stained glass windows at Chartres.

St. Theodore pray for us that like you we may always say from our hearts , " Jesus Christ is my one God . "

Today the Church also celebrates the dedication of St John Lateran

Basilica-of-St-John-Lateran_Interior-view_6394.jpg

St John Lateran is the Pope's church, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides.

The first basilica on the site was built in the fourth century when Constantine donated land he had received from the wealthy Lateran family. That structure and its successors suffered fire, earthquake and the ravages of war, but the Lateran remained the church where popes were consecrated until the popes returned from Avignon in the 14th century to find the church and the adjoining palace in ruins.

Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure in 1646. One of Rome's most imposing churches, the Lateran's towering facade is crowned with 15 colossal statues of Christ, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and 12 doctors of the Church. Beneath its high altar rest the remains of the small wooden table on which tradition holds St Peter himself celebrated Mass.

St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist pray for Pope Francis that he will always be fearless in proclaiming the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour , Jesus Christ .

Reading about the Martyr Saints is often difficult as you cannot deny the ultimate sacrifice they made for their faith and it challenges us in our own lives and makes us ask what we've done in the name of that same faith...

Thanks be to God who , through his mercy and the help we receive from the saints , comes to our rescue .

Saint Leo the Great

st_leo.jpg

Pope. Born in Rome probably, in the 5th century, of Tuscan parents, little is known of Pope Leo's early life. As a young man he was a deacon and was employed as a peacemaker between two generals in Gaul.

He was elected Pope in 440 and during his 20 years pontificate devoted himself to unity and peace in the church.

He fought against the teachings of Euryches, a monk who insisted that Jesus had only one nature. In 451 he wrote his famous 'Tome' sent to the Council of Chacedon through the patriarch Flavian of Constantinople.

Ninety-six of his sermons and 432 of his letters survive. St Leo was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1754.

ST. LEO THE GREAT PRAY FOR PEACE AND UNITY IN THE CHURCH , THAT MEANS NOT WHAT I WANT BUT WHAT GOD WANTS .

Saint Martin of Tours

St_Martin_Icon_2006.jpg

Born in 316 in Hungary, St Martin was one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages. His father was a pagan officer in the army and, as a young man, Martin joined up as a conscript. However, he had already come under the influence of Christianity, and realised that the military life was not compatible with his faith.

St Martin was probably one of the earliest conscientious objectors. He made a protest, refused to fight and lived through one war in prison. At the end of hostilities in 357 he was released and, at Amiens, cut his cloak in half - giving it to a poor beggar. After that he was baptised and travelled to Pannonia, Milan and Illyricum.

In 360 he became a monk and was one of the pioneers of western monasticism. In 372 he was made bishop but continued to live in his monk's cell first at the cathedral in Tours and then at the monastery of Marmoutier. During his long life he established many religious communities and travelled around his diocese by donkey, boat and on foot, preaching and healing. He developed a reputation for being a wonder worker. After his death on this day in 397. the cathedral became a centre for pilgrimage. Five hundred village churches and 4,000 parish churches were dedicated to him.

He is depicted in many churches across Europe. In England the most complete cycle in stained glass is at St Martin's church in York, Chalgrave in Bedfordshire and Nassington in Northants. His emblems are either a globe of fire - seen over his head while he said Mass, or a goose - whose migration coincides with his feast.

Saint Martin of Tours , please pray for us that we may never neglect the beggars , the hungry , the homeless , and all those on the margins of society . May we put them at the centre of society .

Bishop. This Sixth century saint was an Irish nobleman who was baptised by St Colman. Later he became a monk and disciple of St Columba on Iona. He is said to have evangelised Mull and Aberdeen. For centuries, water from his well was used for baptisms in Aberdeen cathedral. A few dedications to him survive in this part of Scotland.

Saint Machar please pray for the Church in Scotland .

also St Josaphat

st-josaphat.jpg

Archbishop. Born in 1584 in Wolodimir in Poland, he became a monk of the Byzantine rite when he was about 20. Ten years later he was made abbot of Vilnius. Josaphat devoted his life to promoting unity between the Orthodox and Catholic churches. In 1618 he was made archbishop of Polatsk in Bielarus, and continued to defend the Byzantine rite Catholics against the Roman rite Polish clergy. When Russia set up a rival Orthodox hierarchy in 1623, he was murdered by a mob of Cossacks at Vitebsk. He was the first Eastern-rite Catholic to be formally canonised in 1867. The Latin rite recognised him in 1882.

St Josaphat please pray for all Eastern Catholic Churches . May they be held in esteem by the Universal Church .

Frances-Xavier-Cabrini-9234150-1-402.jpg

Nun. Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first American citizen to be canonized.

Born in 1850, in Lodi in Italy, she was the thirteenth child of her family. As a young woman she worked as a teacher in a parish orphanage at Codogno, In 1874 she founded the Mother House of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart there. She dreamed of sending her sisters to China but instead her bishop advised her to concentrate on supporting the Italian immigrants who were going to the United States in large numbers. She went to New York with her first group of sisters in 1889.

From that time year after year she sent more sisters. She ended up founding 67 institutions, including schools, hospitals and orphanages - both in the USA and in Europe. Frances eventually became an American citizen and died of malaria in one of her own hospitals in 1921 in Chicago. She was canonised in 1946.

Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini please pray for the Church in America .

Saint Laurence O'Toole (Lorchan Ua Tuathail)

Icon_St._L_o_T.jpg

Archbishop of Dublin. St Laurence was born about 1128 in Co Kildare of a marriage between the chieftain families O'Toole and O'Byrne. He spent most of his childhood as a hostage of Dermot McMurrogh, King of Leinster.

Laurence became a monk at Glendalough and was elected abbot at the age of 25. Besides leading a life of prayer, the community was very involved in famine relief and preaching against brigandage. In 1162, Laurence was elected archbishop of Dublin. He introduced the Austin Canons into the parish churches of the diocese and wore their habit himself, spending part of his time in living in Kevin's cell. He was also very active in work for the poor.

When the English invaded in 1170, he acted as a peacemaker between Strongbow and the Irish. He took part in various synods including Cashel where clerical celibacy and the Sarum Rite were accepted.

He negotiated a treaty between Henry II of England and Rory O'Connor, High King of Ireland. In 1179, he was sent to Rome with five other bishops to give a report on the Church in Ireland.

Laurence was involved in several struggles with the church in his efforts to prevent corruption. He also fell out with Henry II because, through the courts, he fiercely defended the rights of the Irish to keep their own land and property from Norman settlers who had arrived with the invading army.

King Henry was so angry with him that, in 1180, when Laurence had gone to England for negotiations, he refused to see him, keeping him waiting at Abingdon for three weeks before heading for Normandy. Laurence followed him and was given permission to return to Dublin. But, on the way, he died at Eu on this day in 1180.

St Laurence was canonised in 1225. He is pictured in the painted calendar of saints in the basilica of the Crowned Martyrs of Rome.

Saint Laurence O'Toole please pray for the people of Ireland .
Make us always aware of the needs of the poor .
Help us to be peacemakers that we may be called the children of God .

Saint Fintan
3370.jpg

Hermit. Born in Leinster, in the 9th century, St Fintan was captured and made a slave by Vikings who took him to the Orkneys. Fintan escaped and was protected by a Scottish bishop whose name has been lost.

To give thanks for his rescue, Fintan made a pilgrimage to Rome. On his way back he joined a group of hermits on an island in the Rhine near Schaffhausen, where he spent the rest of his life.

The Sacramentary of Zurich contains a calendar of Irish saints which may have been his. He died in 879. The relics of St Fintan still survive at a shrine in Rheinau built in 1446.

Saint Fintan , slavery still goes on to this day . Through your prayers may slaves be set free and those who indulge in this evil trade be brought to repentance .

Saint Margaret of Scotland

st__margaret_of_scotland_icon_by_theophilia-d5ueck2.jpg

Queen and patron of Scotland. Born in 1046, St Margaret was educated mainly in Hungary, where her family were exiled during the rule of the Viking kings in England. As one of the last members of the Anglo Saxon royal family, she was in danger after the Norman Conquest and took refuge at the court of Malcolm II of Scotland.

Intelligent, beautiful and devout, she married Malcolm in 1069 and the union was exceptionally happy and fruitful for Scotland. The present royal family can trace their descent to Margaret and her daughter Matilda.

Margaret took a keen interest in the country. Through her, the Scottish courts were reformed and the church was revitalised. She founded many monasteries, hostels and churches.

Her private life was devoted to prayer, reading, embroidery and lavish almsgiving (including the liberation of slaves). She is said to have had a very civilising effect on her husband who was initially considered a rather rough character. Her biographer wrote: "He saw that Christ truly dwelt in her heart. What she rejected he rejected. What she loved, he for love of her loved too."

Malcolm could not read but liked to see the books she used at prayer and would have them embellished with gold and silver binding. One of her books survives in the Bodleian library.

Margaret had eight children. Alexander and David became kings of Scotland her daughter Matilda married Henry I of England. She lived just long enough to learn of the tragic death of Malcolm and one of her sons on a military expedition against William Rufus who had confiscated Edgar Atheling's estates. She died at just 47 in 1093.

Margaret was buried beside her husband in Dunfermline. Following many miracles, she was canonised in 1250. At the Reformation, both bodies were taken to the Escorial in Madrid. She was named patron of Scotland in 1673.

Saint Margaret of Scotland please pray for the people of Scotland .

Through your prayers may the Church in Scotland be revitalised .

Like you , may we be generous in prayer and lavish in almsgiving .

Saint Hugh of Lincoln

287.jpg

Bishop. Born at Avalon in Burgundy, in 1135, St Hugh came to England at the request of King Henry II, who wanted him to found a Carthusian monastery at Witham in Somerset as part of his reparations for the murder of St Thomas Becket. St Hugh had already been a Carthusian for 17 years. He spent seven years at Witham living a quiet prayerful life.

From time to time King Henry, who is said to have been very overbearing, would call him to the court. After a few years Hugh began to gently refuse to take orders from the King, until he had given compensation and accommodation to a number of people who had been evicted from their homes to make room for the monastery.

After meeting with his king, he would hurry back to his prayers and his pets - which included a tame swan.

In 1186 Hugh had to leave the quiet monastic life to become bishop of the largest diocese in England - Lincoln. The see had been vacant for 16 years and was very neglected.

Hugh proved to be as good a bishop as he was a monk. He fought for the common people against the king's foresters who enforced savage forest laws in the vast royal hunting grounds. At Lincoln and in Northampton he stood up to mobs rioting against the Jews. He also visited the sick, played with children and oversaw a huge rebuilding programme at Lincoln cathedral which had been damaged by an earthquake.

Hugh said he had a 'peppery' temper. His admirers said he was a 'A good man, fearless as a lion'. He calmed the anger of Richard I with a joke. He refused to pay taxes that supported a war against France.

He died at Lincoln's Inn in London in 1200. St Hugh has been been described as one of the most attractive characters of mediaeval England. John Ruskin said he was: "The most beautiful sacerdotal figure known to men in history."

In 1220 he was canonised by Pope Honorius III, the first Carthusian to receive this honour.

The Rose window, called the Dean's Eye, at Lincoln cathedral records his funeral.

Many pilgrims came to his shrine at Lincoln until the Reformation, when it was destroyed. His usual iconography is his tame swan. A picture of him at the charterhouse in Paris became a centre of pilgrimage for mothers and sick children. His white linen stole survives in the charterhouse at Parkminster in West Sussex.

Saint Hugh of Lincoln please pray that all anti-Semitism be rooted out of our hearts .

also the Martyrs of Paraguay

santacruz.jpg

St. Roque Gonzalez

Missionaries. These were three Jesuits: Roque Gonzalez, Alonozo Rodriguez and Juan de Castillo who were involved in the 'Reductions' of Paraguay - depicted in the film The Mission.

The Reductions were settlements of Christian Indians run by the missionaries not as conquerors but as guardians and trustees of the native people and their ancient traditions. Their opposition to Spanish colonisation, slave traders and the Inquisition led to their suppression in the 18th century.

Roque was born in Asuncion in 1576 to an aristocratic family. He was ordained in 1599 and made vicar general in 1609. For the rest of his life he worked in the Reductions, first in that of St Ignatius, then later founding six more to the east of the Parana and Uruguay rivers. In the course of his work he suffered extreme hunger, exhaustion and insect bites. These discomforts he said were more than offset by the love and friendship of the Indian people.
In 1620 he was joined by Alonzo and Juan and found a new Reduction near the Ijuhu river. The three were killed by a hostile tribe between the 15 and 17 of November.

Although evidence was at once collected, it was lost for 200 years. When the documents were discovered in Argentina in the 1930s, the process for beatification began and they were canonised in 1988.

Jesuit Martyrs of Paraguay please pray that the actions of Christians may not be an obstacle to the spreading of the Gospel .

Please pray for justice and peace throughout South America .

Village of St. Mawes in Cornwall

Bishop. According to tradition, St Mawes was the 5th century founder and patron of the fishing village near Falmouth in Cornwall which bears his name.

He is also associated with St Budoc. Legend says they were both Welsh monks and founded monasteries in Cornwall and Brittany. St Mawes had a reputation for being a fine teacher. He was invoked against headaches, snakebite and worms.

About 60 churches in Brittany are dedicated to him. His relics were venerated at Quimper, Treguier, Lesneven and other places - especially Bourges which claimed his body was translated there during the Viking invasions.

Saint Nerses

4824.jpg

Bishop and martyr. Nerses lived in fourth-century Armenia. He was an official in the court of King Arshak. After the death of his wife, Nerses was ordained a priest. He became chief bishop of Armenia in 363 and worked with St Basil to evangelise the people of Armenia.

During his life Nerses built many monasteries and hospitals and encouraged the rich to be honest and generous.

When Arshak, the King of Armenia murdered the queen, Olympia, Bishop Nerses publicly condemned the crime. For this he was banished from his diocese.

King Arshak was killed in a battle against the Persians. His son succeeded him and offered to reinstate Bishop Nerses, inviting him for dinner. The food he served was poisoned and St Nerses died at the king's table. The Armenian Catholic Church call him 'the great.'

Saint Nerses , please pray for the people of Armenia .

Builder of hospitals , encourage all who care for the sick to place them at the centre of society .

Continue to encourage the rich to be honest and generous .

Saint Edmund

Saint_Edmund.jpg

King of East Anglia. On Christmas Day 855, at the age of 14, Edmund was declared King of Norfolk by the ruling men and clergy. In the following year, Suffolk also declared him to be their king. For the next 15 years he ruled over East Anglia with Christian dignity and justice. Edmund was noted for his piety and often recited the psalms during Masses.

When the Great Army of the Vikings, under Ingwar, invaded the country, they captured Edmund and tried to force him to reject his faith. He refused and according to tradition was killed with arrows, beheaded and offered to the Viking gods at Hellesden in Suffolk.

His body was buried in a small wooden chapel nearby. In 915, it was found to be uncorrupt and was transferred to what later became Bury St Edmunds.

When Danish invaders arrived at Ipswich it was taken to London for safety, but eventually returned to Bury.

A great cult formed around St Edmund during mediaeval times. More than 60 churches in England are dedicated to to him and he features in many church murals and paintings.

The exact whereabouts of his remains now is not known. One story claims they were taken by French solders to Toulouse in 1215. In 1912 these relics were offered to Westminster cathedral, but the authorities decided not to accept them as they were not sure whether they were authentic. Many claim he still lies in Bury St Edmunds.

Saint Edmund , king and martyr , who ruled with Christian dignity and justice , may the example of your life inspire us to see the dignity in every human being and always to seek justice .

Saint Condedus

Hermit. St Condedus was a 7th century English 'exile for Christ'. He went to France to live with a community at Fontenelle, but then decided to become a hermit. King Thierry gave him an island called Belcinac in the middle of the river Seine, where he built two churches. Many visitors used to go there to see him.

After his death, Condedus was buried at Fontenelle. The island has long since submerged under the river Seine.

Saint Condedus , of whom so little is known , may all who still live their lives as hermits be helped by your intercession .
