(CBS/AP) “Did our dad have to die?” Peggy Cohen wanted to know Tuesday as mine safety regulators opened an emotional public hearing on questions still surrounding the January disaster that left 12 men dying deep inside the Sago Mine.

Wives and children of the other miners followed her to the microphone, some clutching framed photos of the victims.

Ann Meredith read from the final note left by her father, James Bennett, reports CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston.

"The last thing he wrote was at 4:25 pm," said Meredith, "'I love you' and he tried to write out my name but could not finish."

It's one thing if it's an accident, another if it could have been avoidable. I feel so aweful for these people. The one thing to pray for is the screwups here are not repeated. I also hope the union makes a come back here in WV. Whatever people may think of unions the UMWA has always had safety in mind.
