"Forty-seven prominent conservatives have signed an open letter warning the mainstream media against using data on hate groups compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)"

These conservatives who signed this letter are absolutely correct.

The fifth anniversary has just passed of the terrorist event for which the SPLC’s hate map and website were used to target its victims for political assassination...
The U.S. Attorney stated in federal court that Corkins targeted FRC and the additional targets by using the SPLC website’s “Hate Map.”

...a name on that [SPLC] list of someone... - Ayaan Hirsi Ali. For those of you who do not know Ayaan, she was the Dutch parliamentarian who in 2004 produced a film with Theo Van Gogh called Submission, which focused on the oppression of women in the Muslim world... ...She has had to live with death threats and under constant protection ever since.

Awesome. It appears SPLC exploited the politically correct environment by smearing innocent persons and organizations in order to amass tens of millions of funding dollars offshore.

Oh come on, such lists and such targeting occur on both left and right. So let's not discredit ideas because some who hold them are bad people, but rather examine the truth of the ideas themselves.

What group on the right has put out a list similar to the SPLC? And what media outlet has used such a list from a right wing group as if it was authoritative?

I'm just highlighting the folly of such declarations. Anyone can make one, and yes, just declaring something doesn't make it automatically true.

For many perception is reality.

You never heard of people shooting abortion providers?

I believe Grasping asked about what group on the right has put out a list similar to the SPLC and what media outlet chose to run with said list as authoritative.

What does that form of terrorism have to do with a right wing list or a media outlet running it?

Well that certainly answers my question. If i asked you what mustard cost would you answer " do you deny the sky is blue?"

FRC, Liberty Counsel, and ADF have all spent many years spreading lies about gay people.

I used to be somewhat dismissive of of SPLC's hate group list precisely because they listed groups like this, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how little difference there is between groups like this and more overt hate groups.

Might as well conclude the matter with the left hates the right, and the right hates the left. They all can be "hate groups" together - or apart :D.

That seems to be the way things are going with many of these "anti-hate" groups.

Previously they would stick to attacking groups that enacted in violence, who said ridiculously offensive things, who actively sought to persecute groups or who in some other way clearly were trying to harm a group of people. By and large the average person could easily agree that such groups should be opposed and that anyone opposing such groups should be praised.

But slowly and steadily the standard for what made something a "hate" group began to weaken. It largely became more about what opinions the group held, rather than what actions they took. If had the wrong beliefs then it was argued that there was "little difference" between them and people who bombed Churches.

This has given the public pause. Suddenly it's not as obvious that people should be virulently opposed merely for believing the wrong things.

But it's going to get worse very soon. Just as the standard weakened from "we oppose groups that persecute others" to "we oppose groups that believe the wrong things" the standard will weaken again to "we oppose groups that don't do enough to support the right things." That is, we are approaching a time when mere indifference will be enough to earn the label of "hate group."

Some activists are basically already there. When Black Lives Matters shuts down highways, it's not because they believe that the people that they are stopping are actively doing anything against black people or even that they secretly harbor racist beliefs. The problem is that they aren't actively involved in the cause to further Black Lives Matters's goals, so they must be inconvenienced until they realize that they must take up the fight.

You can see the reasons the SPLC has for listing each individual group as a hate group on their website. Check it out any time. For example, the Family Research Council has an odd habit of saying hateful, untrue things about gay people, the gay community, et cetera:

"We believe the evidence shows … that relative to the size of their population, homosexual men are more likely to engage in child sexual abuse than are heterosexual men." -Peter Sprigg, Debating Homosexuality: Understanding Two Views, 2011.

"While activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. … It is a homosexual problem." FRC President Tony Perkins, FRC website, 2010

"Gaining access to children has been a long-term goal of the homosexual movement." -Robert Knight, FRC director of cultural studies, and Frank York, 1999

If someone went and repeatedly campaigned, telling people that all Republicans were pedophiles, would they be a hate group? Yes. And the same is true for if they do it with gays.

The same is true for if they do it with gays.

Who made the claim that all homosexuals are pedophiles? All I see in your quotes are statements that there is a disproportionate incidence of pedophilia within homosexual communities.

If the data bears that out, does it make you part of a hate group to say it? Should we declare statisticians hate groups preemptively just to be sure that they don't dig up any more hateful statistics?

The data doesn't bear out, though. No reputable studies have showed anything like that.

Statistics aren't hateful; they are factual. And they show nothing like the idea that gay people are more likely to be pedophiles or child molesters.
