There's been quite a lot about whether Russian tennis players should be identifiable with their country when playing in a competition. The Ukrainian Elina Svitolina is refusing to play against any Russian players who carry any such country identification. But I think it's quite straightforward for Russian tennis players to disavow any connection with their country as tennis players.

Unless, you are playing for your country (e.g. Davis Cup), a tennis player playing in a tournament, such as Wimbledon, isn't playing for their country - they are playing for themselves. In fact I always wonder why they put the country against their name in the competition. More often than not the player has moved to live in another country anyway.

edit: PS I'm a fan of Elina who doesn't have a big game but is a real grafter who never gives up. Maybe this will spur her to a first grand slam win.
