Oh dear, looks like someone has a hit on their hands!

“If a kid gets locked out of school for a year, that kid got Fauci’d,” DeSantis said. “If someone is out of work for a year because of lockdowns, that worker got Fauci’d. If a family loses a business due to the lockdown, that family got Fauci’d. We’re not gonna allow that in the state of Florida.”

Good luck!

I'm starting to see a shift in sentiment in the comments of articles related to Desantis where it seems there are many many people in Florida that are fed up with him.

Awesome will buy. I think Fauci should be tried for crimes against humanity. And we have the death penalty for such crimes.

So are new COVID-19 infections. He's really messed up, this time.

Nobody cares. Seriously, there is no scientific or moral reason to care if infections are up. How pathetic.

There is a scientific reason, I'm sorry that you just aren't objective enough to see it!

Here's a graph that illustrates exactly why number of infections is a poor metric at this point in the pandemic. This shows the second and third wave of COVID in the UK. As you can clearly see, the number of deaths is substantially lower in the third wave despite having more infections. This is a result of a combination of vaccination and natural immunity;

There's every reason to believe that this current "wave" of infections in the US will follow the same trend.

Continuing from my last post, we already have data that shows that an increase of cases no longer necessitates that there will be an increase in deaths. When we look back to March and April when there was an increase in case numbers in the US, we can see that the deaths did not follow them. Despite everyone's calls to "just wait 2 more weeks!", the death numbers never increased. This graph from the CDC shows deaths (in red) and cases (in yellow) for 2021 YTD;

Nobody cares.

The families of over a half a million Americans care.

Seriously, there is no scientific or moral reason to care if infections are up.

Other than all the deaths that result. DeSantis is supposed to be governor, and is supposed to be acting to protect Floridians from this pandemic. Instead, he made it worse. At a time when Florida needs strong leadership, they have an empty suit with a good haircut.

How pathetic.

No kidding.

No kidding.

In fact, so few died that the CDC had to break federal law to unilaterally to create new data definitions and standards to create a higher number.

Isn't breaking federal data standard laws great? Totally shows just how trustworthy they are. Oh, got to get rid of employer reporting mandates and vaccine breakthrough statistics - totally the way to build trust.

Doctors have gotten a lot better at dealing with the acute stages of the disease. The "long hauler"symptoms, however, aren't so easy to deal with. There's going to be many, many people with problems that hang on for a length of time we really don't know yet. The April surge in Florida resulted in less than a 37% increase in deaths.

Florida is seeing a very strong increase in infections; so far, no spike in deaths. Let's see what a week or so brings.

"Long COVID";

The concept of long Covid has a highly unorthodox origin: online surveys produced by Body Politic, which launched in 2018 and describes itself atop its website’s homepage as “a queer feminist wellness collective merging the personal and the political.” In March 2020, the group’s co-founders created the Body Politic Covid-19 Support Group, and as part of their mission of “cultivating patient led research,” the organization coordinated a series of online surveys on persistent symptoms. Based on the results of these, Body Politic produced the first report on long Covid in May.

But many of the survey respondents who attributed their symptoms to the aftermath of a Covid-19 infection likely never had the virus in the first place. Of those who self-identified as having persistent symptoms attributed to Covid and responded to the first survey, not even a quarter had tested positive for the virus. Nearly half (47.8%) never had testing and 27.5% tested negative for Covid-19. Body Politic publicized the results of a larger, second survey in December 2020. Of the 3,762 respondents, a mere 600, or 15.9%, had tested positive for the virus at any time.

This is not a surprise. It happened with two other coronavirus diseases. It's just one of the things that happens with these viruses.

SARS-CoV-2 can attack the body in a range of ways, causing damage to the lungs, heart, nervous system, kidneys, liver and other organs. Mental health problems can arise from grief and loss, unresolved pain or fatigue, or from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Brigham says, “We're seeing a spectrum of symptoms after acute COVID-19, some of which would be expected after other critical illnesses. Some are minor, but other people may need continuing care and even readmission to the hospital.” She notes that similar, lingering problems can affect patients with other serious illnesses.
...
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, is a condition that affects blood circulation, and people who have survived COVID-19 may be more vulnerable to it. Tae Chung, M.D., who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation, says “POTS can leave survivors with other neurologic symptoms, including continuing headache, fatigue, brain fog, difficulties in thinking or concentrating, and insomnia.

Even in patients without POTS, persistent post-COVID-19 insomnia, or “COVID-somnia” is an increasingly common complaint among COVID-19 survivors.
...
Brigham says that the sheer scale of caring for patients with lingering COVID-19 symptoms is a serious challenge. She notes that clinicians saw post-viral symptoms in patients affected by two other coronavirus diseases — severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).

But, she says, outbreaks of those diseases were limited. Millions more people have had COVID-19 than SARS or MERS, so the potential problem of lingering health problems is huge, particularly in the context of the pandemic, with isolation, economic disadvantage, lack of access and changed daily routines further compounding the complexities of long-term COVID-19 care.

In multivariable analysis, patients with neurological complications during index hospitalization had significantly worse 6-month functional outcomes than those without.
