This Evangelical Minister Helped Build the Religious Right. He Now Believes He Made a Terrible Mistake.

It's interesting to see his spiritual journey. Several years ago he did a documentary criticizing gun culture. He has slowly been moving away from the religious right for some time.

He also mentions Bonhoeffer as an influence. I think its difficult to take Bonhoeffer seriously and be comfortable with American evangelicalism. Some pull it off, such as Eric Metaxas, but that's only because Metaxas deals with Bonhoeffer on the most superficial level (he has no formal theological or philosophical training to understand Bonhoeffer's context).

Schenck is checking all the right boxes. We have "racism plays a role in a large sector of American evangelicalism." And then inevitable but lamentable "parallels between 1930s Nazi Germany and present-day America." This is propaganda gold.

Schenck is Jewish and is probably much more sensitive to a Christian movement embracing far-right nationalism. So it's not just some kind of Godwin-esque cliche.

He has a new book out, Costly Grace, a spiritual memoir of sorts. I'd be curious to read it. It's noteworthy his perspective on abortion has moved more towards the consensus of the historic mainline denominations.
