I was raised in a household full of Roosevelt Democrats. My father adored Roosevelt, same for Truman, and my mother thought John Kennedy walked on water.
I started moving away from that model when I joined the Air Force; I voted for Reagan both times because he was for a strong defense. Whatever "Democrat" sensibilities I might have once had evaporated when Clinton was elected. (FWIW, I voted for Ross Perot in both 1992 and 1996.)
I count myself now as a total Independant. I think the Republican party is too into cronyism, and the Democrat party is so far removed from what it was in 1960, it might as well be a totally different party. The Democrats used to stand for fair working wages and prosperity for the laborer; now they stand for baby-killing, assisted suicide, and the mainstreaming of sexual perversion. I can still hold my nose and vote for the occasional Republican---but there is no way in heaven, hell, or earth that I will ever vote for a Democrat. Their platform is just too radical and amoral.
If Romney can repair some of the damage that Comrade Soetoro has inflicted on us over the last four years, in 2016 I will probably think very seriously about voting third party again.
