Our balance is a function of the inner ear sending messages to the brain about the relation of our body to our surroundings. Our brains are hard wired to receive this information and send messages to our bodies to respond in a way that keeps us from falling. When a person has their inner ear damaged, particularly the Vestibular system and the cochlea, they lose their balance. Recently a group of people got together to test some theories. The group was comprised of engineers, neurophysiologists, medical doctors, and rehabilitation experts. They devised a helmet attached to a mouth piece that gave electrical impulses to the tongue saying weather the top of the head was out of alignment with their surroundings. One of their test subjects was a lady that had her entire Vestibular system destroyed by an antibiotic. She was bound to a wheelchair for life. But when they put this contraption on her she learned to walk, even run, jump and ride a bicycle again. Praise God! What an amazing invention! But the story goes on. After prolonged use of the apparatus she found that she didnt need it anymore. Just as the neurophysiologists had suspected her brain had rewired itself to rely on different input to tell its body how to stay balanced. How this works is beyond me but the fact that it works should be a source of hope for us all. This is an example of renewing the mind and how to do it! Our brains are hardwired to perceive this world through our eyes and our circumstances. This is why so many people think truth is subjective. When we feed our brains a different way to perceive this world, i.e. by faith through grace, we renew our minds to the incorruptible truth of God! Just like the lady who learned to balance again we must practice using the Word in our circumstances and through practice our minds will begin to perceive the spiritual truth that trumps the physical existence.
